JAMMU, Nov 25: A daylong workshop on combating cruelty to animals was organised today at District Police Lines (DPL) Jammu by PETA India in collaboration with SAVE Society, with participation from police officers of Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts.
As per a statement, probationary DySPs and Sub-Inspectors attended the session, which focused on enforcing animal protection laws more effectively.
The programme was held under the leadership of IGP Jammu Division Bhim Sen Tuti, DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) Range Shiv Kumar, and SSP Jammu Joginder Singh.
During his address, DIG Shiv Kumar Sharma highlighted challenges in animal protection, stressing the need for strict enforcement of laws and greater awareness among police personnel.
Nearly 100 officers took part in the workshop, where experts explained key provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the Wildlife Protection Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
PETA India’s Legal Advisor and Director of Cruelty Response, Meet Ashar, thanked Jammu and Kashmir Police for prioritising the issue and said the organisation is committed to supporting efforts to curb animal abuse.
The officials said such training will help police personnel respond more effectively to cases of animal cruelty, especially in situations involving abandoned animals, illegal transport, wildlife violations and organised abuse.
Officers were encouraged to coordinate closely with animal welfare groups and use legal tools available under different laws.
The workshop also highlighted national data showing rising crimes against animals and the need for stronger penalties.
PETA India emphasised that increasing fines and punishments under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act would act as a deterrent and help build a more compassionate and law-abiding society.
