*Local authorities in slumber

RAJOURI, June 9: A strange incident came to light in Rajouri’s Darhal area on Monday when local people were seen sowing paddy in the water accumulated on the road near bus stand in the main market of Darhal town.
Local residents, Murtaza Mirza, Tabrez Malik and Dilnawaz Malik told that the houses, shops etc. around the bus stand at Darhal have no outlet/drain for the water. The pipes of Jal Shakti department are leaking and all this water accumulates on the road.
With the accumulation of this water near bus stand, close to the main market, a large shallow pool of water has been created there. The public is suffering for the last several weeks but nobody in the administration listens. The PHE and R&B authorities appeared to have gone in deep slumber.
Even after repeated requests, when the concerned departments or the officers at the helm of affairs did not pay any heed to the issue, then to make them realize, people started sowing paddy in the water accumulated on the road today.
They said that due to large potholes on the road the water accumulated in them and cause trouble to the common people while walking on- foot. Moreover, it has become a breeding site for the mosquitoes, increasing risk of water borne diseases.
By planting crop in the water, people have tried to draw the attention of the Government towards this burning issue, being neglected by the local officers at the helm of affairs.
The people warned that if even after this, the R&B department fails to take action then they will start an agitation.
R&B AEE, Javed Rana when contacted, said that the work is going on to make the road concrete and the drain will also be constructed but there is some part where the pipes of PHE Department are laid and if all the pipes are uprooted, then people may have to face water shortage.
