People protest, block Poonch road for 3 hrs

POONCH, Sept 18: Residents of  2-3 villages staged protest demonstration near Surankote and blocked road for about three hours while two street- hawkers hailing from Punjab, were severely beaten up by people and left nearly half dead in Mendhar area today.
These two poor men were living in a rented house at Mendhar and used to repair pressure cookers of the people in the area. When they were roaming Dera Walan area for their livelihood today, some people suspected them as members of masked men gang, indulging in throwing stones at houses  during nights, lifting children and indulging in extortion and started them beating. Some more villagers also joined and severely beaten them with lathis and kicks & blows left nearly half dead.
Later, police from Mendhar came to know about the matter and reached there. They shifted  them to Police Station at around 4 pm. They were identified as Sunil Kumar, son of Subash Chander and Shamsher Singh, son of Gurdeep Singh of Amritsar, presently residing in the rented house of one Haji Mehmood at Mendhar. Sunil’s wife and children besides landlord when came to know about the matter rushed to Thana and pleaded the cops to shift the injured persons to hospital but for over three hours no treatment was provided to these innocent men and they were put in the lock- up. The wife and landlord requested police to register case against the attackers for beating innocents but their plea was turned down.
Meanwhile, the people from Seri Chuana, Merian and Hari villages assembled at Madana near Surankote and held strong protest against police for its failure to arrest the members of masked men gang operating in the area. The villagers blocked road at around 10 am and continued their protest by raising barricades up to three hours. A large number of vehicles remained stranded on two sides of the highway for long.
Later, Tehsildar Surankote Mohd Sayed and DySP Hqrs Haq Nawaz rushed to the spot and assured the people to arrest the members of the gang as early as possible. They said additional police parties have been deployed at various places and army assistance is also being taken to arrest the gangsters. Later, villagers lifted dharna.
