SRINAGAR, Oct 26: While condemning spurt of violence after clash between two groups at Zanaskar in district Kargil, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti urged the Government to ensure safety and security of people there.
In a press statement issued here today, the PDP leader expressed anguish at the miseries heaped on a handful of defenseless people and the Government’s inability to enforce law and order. She strongly condemned the violent incidents in Zanaskar that had left many people injured and homes damaged.
The PDP president further said it was matter of shame that Government failed to reach out to the people of distant areas in time which has created panic and fear among them. Even though the situation has been simmering for nearly a month, the Government for its arrogance and callousness allowed it to build into a communal crisis that could have ominous portents for the entire sensitive region, she maintained.
It is unfortunate that Chief Minister spent a day in the region for partisan political pursuit but had no time to visit Zanaskar and take stock of situation. She said Government must make all arrangements for the treatment of those injured in violence. She demanded that victims should be fully compensated.
She said both NC and Congress who claim representation of Ladakh owe moral responsibility to ensure that communal peace in Ladakh region was not disturbed on any pretext. She said the two parties must rise above their vote bank politics and ensure that ugly communal incidents do not take place in future. She urged the Government to relax curfew on the occasion of Eid.
