Pak Envoy meets Syed Ali Shah Geelani

NEW DELHI :  Adding more fuel to the already simmering  political controversy, hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Syed  Ali Shah Geelani held a meeting with Pakistan High Commissioner  Abdul Basit here today and reportedly discussed the developments  in the valley.
It took place two days after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Syed released a separatist leader Masarat Alam from jail, provoking nationwide protests and ruckus in Parliament.
It was not immediately clear what was discussed at the meet, which lasted for 45 minutes.
The meeting between Ali Shah Geelani and the Pakistan High Commissioner, which took place at Delhi residence of Mr Geelani, took place hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Parliament that his government would not tolerate any step that undermines India’s unity and integrity.     The Prime Minister said in Lok Sabha that the Centre was not consulted by the Jammu and Kashmir government on the decision  to release Alam.
“Parliament, in one voice, has condemned this type of action. I assure the country and the House that whatever is happening there (in J&K), the Union government was neither consulted not informed…Government does not accept such action.     “In one voice, we express our anger against those supporting separatists and misusing the law. In the coming days, we will take whatever action is required and we are committed to the nation’s integrity,” the Prime Minister said.    Last year in August, India had cancelled Foreign Secretary level talks with Pakistan after the Pakistan High Commissioner invited the Hurriyat leaders for a meeting.
