RAJOURI, Aug 13: A large number of students from the Scheduled Tribe (ST2 – Pahari) category on Wednesday staged a protest in Rajouri town against the Tribal Affairs Department of Jammu and Kashmir over the delay in the release /disbursement of scholarships.
Under the banner of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), several Pahari students of Government PG College, Rajouri boycotted their classes and gathered in front of the institution, blocking the road and staging a peaceful demonstration. The protesters raised slogans against Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and demanded immediate release of their pending scholarships for the current academic year.
The students alleged that despite the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs having sanctioned the required funds, the JKUT authorities have failed to transfer the amount. They said that many students from remote and far-flung areas depend on these scholarships to continue their education, and the delay is causing severe hardships.
A police team led by SHO Rajouri, Insp Abid Shah, reached the spot and held talks with the protesters. The officer assured them that their demands would be conveyed to the concerned department and efforts would be made for an early resolution. Following the assurance, the students dispersed peacefully, ending their protest.
