India searching for answers before Derbyshire game

Derbyshire, June 30:

After a not-so-satisfactory first practice game against Leicestershire, India are still searching for answers when they take on Derbyshire in their second three-day tour match starting tomorrow.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni and company may have had decent batting practice in the rain-marred game in Leicester before the first of the five Tests kickstarts July 9 but bowling seemed to be an area of concern for the visitors.
With India trying out all their 18 players in a match that was not accorded First-class status, the bowling line-up leaked runs aplenty as the bottom-placed Division 2 County side amassed 349 for five in reply to the visitor’s score of 333 for four.
The visitors tried out all their 18 players in the match and hence it wasn’t accorded First-Class status. While it proved a good chance for the players to shake off their rust and get accustomed to English conditions, the results obtained were just about satisfactory at best. (PTI)

LOOLIPORA (BUDGAM), June 30: Saying that unemployment problem is the biggest challenge confronting the Government, the Minister for Finance & Ladakh Affairs, Abdul Rahim Rather today said all the resources are being pooled to create maximum possible job avenues for the unemployed youth of the State. While new posts are being created on regular basis, all the vacancies in various departments would be filled up on fast track basis.
Addressing public gatherings in Hampora and Loolipora villages in Chrar-i- Sharief constituency on Monday, Mr Rather said creation of job avenues for unemployed youth remains the top priority of present Government, which after taking over the reins devised a first of its kind job policy in the country called Sher-i-Kashmir Employment and Welfare Programme for Youth (SKEWPY), a scheme acknowledged even at the national level.
He said there are about 60000 vacancies in various departments which will be filled on fast track basis. “We want to see hope and happiness on the gloomy faces of un-employed youth and to make their future bright and safe”, Mr Rather added. He said while every possibility is being explored to provide jobs in public sector, the youth should also venture in private sector by availing attractive incentives available under the State’s Industrial Policy.
Mr Rather cautioned the people against machinations of political opponents who are desperately trying to hoodwink through their falsehood and deceit.”They will try to exploit sentiments and emotions of the innocent people and polarize the communities on religion and regional basis, but be united to thwart their nefarious game plan”, Mr Rather cautioned.
He said opposition is un-nerved with the performance of the present Government and desperately tries to mislead people by false propaganda. He said the Govt is well abreast with the problems of the people adding that no stone will be left un-turned to come up to their expectations. He said promises made to the people will be fulfilled earnestly and all genuine grievances redressed without delay.

Costa Rica beat Greece 5-3 on penalties to reach WC Quarters

Recife (Brazil), June 30:

Ten-man Costa Rica beat Greece 5-3 on penalties after an epic battle to set up a quarterfinal clash with the Netherlands, who edged out Mexico 2-1 in their last-16 match of the FIFA World Cup.
Costa Rica, who were reduced to 10-man in the second half, were put ahead by Bryan Ruiz in the 52nd minute but a late equaliser by Sokratis Papastathopoulos early in stoppage time rescued Greece as the match headed to extra time.
The two teams, however, could not be separated even in the extra time and finally Costa Rica sealed their maiden quarterfinal berth when Michael Umana converted his team’s fifth penalty after Fanis Gekas missed Greece’s fourth at Arena Pernambuco.
Celso Borges, Bryan Ruiz, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Joel Campbell and Umana converted all the five penalties for Costa Rica, while Konstantinos Mitroglou, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Jose Holebas scored for Greece before Costa Rica goalkeeper Navas made a brilliant save from Theofanis Gekas.
Costa Rica players broke into a dance amid cheering from their fans but the Greece players were left teary-eyed following their exit from the World Cup.
At Fortaleza, Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored an injury-time penalty to send the Netherlands into the quarterfinals with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mexico.
Arjen Robben was adjudged to have been tripped in the area by Rafa Marquez in the injury time and Huntelaar coolly placed a brilliant penalty into the bottom-left corner to knock Mexico out of the tournament.
However, it was Wesley Sneijder who rescued the 2010 runners-up, in the 88th minute, bringing up the equaliser, cancelling out the 48th minute brilliant goal by Giovani Dos Santos which had put Mexico ahead.
Mexicans had dominated the match and looked destined to reach their first quarter-finals since 1986 but Sneijder’s effort two minutes from time and Huntelaar’s penalty in added time crushed their dreams.
In a battle of attrition, neither Greece nor Costa Rica could break the deadlock in the first half of the second match of the day.
Greece, playing their first ever game in the knockout stages of the World Cup, could have gone ahead at the 37th minute when Dimitrios Salpingidis almost sent Jose Holebas’ cross home but goalkeeper Keylor Navas stuck his leg out in time to make a good save.
Costa Rica too had a chance to go one-up when Christian Bolanos penetrated the left side of the penalty area in the eighth minute but his shot went over the crossbar.
Seven minutes into the second half, Costa Rica finally broke Greece’s defensive when Bryan Ruiz found the bottom right corner of the net with a left-footed shot from the edge of the box after being set up by Cristian Bolanos.
Costa Rica, who stunned Uruguay and Italy before drawing with England to finish top of Group D, were reduced to a 10-men team in the 66th minute when Oscar Duarte was sent off for a second yellow.
Desperate for the equaliser, Greece coach Fernando Santos made few substitution changes, one of them was replacing Salpingidis with Theofanis Gekas. The experienced striker got into action soon when he tried to steer a low cross from Holebas but Michael Umana made a important block. (PTI)
