LONDON, July 14: ‘X Files’ star Gillian Anderson has revealed she is embarrassed when she looks back at some of her dresses she wore on the show.
The 45-year-old actress said some of her sartorial choices were bad but she did not bother because she was too exhausted to make any changes, reported Contactmusic.
“The odd thing is that even when I was put in those horrible pastel Lycra suits, there wasn’t a single part of me that considered saying, ‘Woah, wait one second.’
Likewise with the hair, I was made to have red hair, styled in a particular way, but you’d have thought I might have done something with it off screen. Still, I didn’t bother because I was so exhausted,” Anderson said.
She said she cannot believe she did not pay attention to the way she looked. “So for nine years I went to work and was somebody else, without devoting any time or attention to the way I looked.
Now, when I look back at images of myself in those horrible fashion decisions with my weight fluctuating all the time, I can’t believe it,” the actress said. (PTI)

Cameron Diaz wants to travel to space
LONDON, July 14: ‘Vanilla Sky’ star Cameron Diaz has revealed she would love to explore space because she feels it is the next frontier for humans.
The 41-year-old actress said human beings are explorers and hence should think about travelling to other planets, reported Contactmusic.
“I would love to go to space – it really is the next frontier. Humans have to move off this planet at some point. We’re explorers, that’s what we do,” she said. (PTI)
Brooklyn Beckham lands work experience gig with Guy Ritchie
LONDON, July 14: David Beckham’s eldest son Brooklyn was spotted getting dropped off at filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s home by the former soccer star.
Brooklyn, 15, spent four days at the filmmaker’s office in London, reported Daily Mirror.
Brooklyn was dressed casually, carrying a backpack, but did have notepad in hand.
“After arriving at the director’s Grade I listed home, he was then walked to the office, where he was spent five hours before being picked up by a member of the Beckham’s housekeeping staff,” an onlooker said.
The teen’s work experience news comes after recent reports that he had found a job in a coffee shop. He had been doing weekend shifts at his local cafe, where he was apparently paid 2.68 pounds an hour. (PTI)
Moderate 5.6-magnitude quake strikes off PNG
SYDNEY, July 14: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea early today, US geologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake struck at a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles) off the northwest tip of New Britain island, according to the US Geological Survey, at 6:00 am local time (0130 IST Monday).
The epicentre was 109 kilometres west of the town of Rabaul.
Quakes are common in PNG, which sits on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. (AGENCIES)
Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits off northern Chile: USGS
SANTIAGO, July 14: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Chile’s coast, the US Geological Survey said, with no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
The agency said the quake hit at 4:54 pm local time (0224 IST Monday) in the Pacific Ocean 22 kilometres (14 miles) west of Iquique, Chile, at a depth of 35.7 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, according to the national emergency office ONEMI.
An 8.2-magnitude quake in the same area in April killed six people and forced a million to leave their homes in the region around Iquique, 1,800 kilometres north of the capital Santiago.
Chile is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, and is located in the so-called Ring of Fire area of the Pacific Ocean basin. (AGENCIES)

LONDON, July 14: ‘Poison’ hitmaker Nicole Scherzinger has revealed she was teased at school because her mother did not let shave her legs.
The 36-year-old singer said she felt traumatised because she was very hairy while growing up, reported Contactmusic.
“All I know is I’m traumatised, because my mum would never let me shave my legs. She was very strict till a later age, and I was very hairy growing up, so everyone made fun of me for having hairy legs,” she said.
Scherzinger said, though the taunts hurt her, she got over them quickly.
“There’s worse things to be made fun of. Shave your legs and it’s gone, you can’t make fun of me any more,” she said. (PTI)
Plight of oldies
Sir,
With decadence of moral values, the old people find themselves at the receiving end. The elders find it hard to pass evenings of their life comfortably and with dignity. Disintegration of joint family system has left no choice for the oldies but to seek refuge in Old Age Homes. Not only the families where they are often badly treated and taken as a burden, even on bank counters, they are seen in queues with trembling legs. Absence of morality and human values make everyone non-bothersome for such unfortunates, stand torn with the age.
The oldies deserve consoling and sympathetic behaviour at all times. A phenamenon needs to the generated by cultivation of moral and social values, wherein arising above self-interest, caste colour and creed oldies are helped where needed. Stories like Sarwana who had carried his parents on shoulders to the places of pilgrimage. Many centuries back, can definitely enthuse our youngesters to be loyal and obedient towards them. Religious and moral principles can only emancipate these age-torn oldies from old age troubles and disrespect.

Plea to PDD and PHE authorities
Sir,
It is a usual feature that during peak summer season the authorities are bound to enforce power cuts for houses at scheduled or non scheduled hours as a load shedding measure and the consumers are required to bear with such arrangement in scorching heat painfully. Generally, the timings fixed by PHE for water supply for houses during morning and day timings remain from 5 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. respectively.
However, we all know that supply of water which too is scarce and precious for existence can be made available for souls in case availability of uninterrupted power for houses at such peak times is assured. Hence, co-ordination of authorities of both PDD and PHE departments is absolutely essential in interests of people.
With a view to obviate the woes faced by consumers on account of abrupt stoppage/deprivation of water in peak summer due to enforcement of power cut schedule at different timings particularly those affected houses are located in colony/mohallas at all-end points, we request for uniform exemption of power cut schedule across the city during said stated timings preferably, in mutual consultation by authorities of both PDD and PHE departments and directions be issued accordingly.
Further, there is a need to appreciate modified arrangement, if approved, percolate it to ground level staff for strict implementation in order to minimise problem greatly as adherence to power cut-programme at random whether unintentionally or otherwise virtually creates misery at a time when supply of drinking water is already restored for houses.

LONDON, July 14: ‘Tammy’ star Susan Sarandon has revealed she is down with cannabis but feels tobacco is worst for a person’s health.
The 67-year-old actress says her number one secret for looking younger than her age is never smoking cigarettes, reported Contactmusic.
“Theses days there’s a lot of women who don’t look like you through 67 was going to look so I’m not so unusual. A lot of it is down to being happy and staying curious and keeping a sense of humour. But my main advice would be, first of all, don’t smoke cigarettes.
I’m down with cannabis but tobacco is the worst for the skin. And apart from that, just practise moderation because too much of anything takes its toll. Not too much sun, not too much alcohol, not too much food,” Sarandon said.
The actress said alcohol does not suit her because it makes her feels sluggish and she prefers to get some fresh air and power walk when she’s stressed out.
“Alcohol doesn’t really help me. I find the next morning I’m in worse shape than before. What I’ve had in my time is a lot of midnight walks down the West Side Highway of New York City,” she said. (PTI)
Home Guards scream for justice

The J&K Police vide PHQ’s Order No. 86 of 1990 dated: 05-12-1990 had regularized the services of Volunteers’ Home Guards (VHGs). Since then till date no such order has been issued. The volunteers enrolled thereafter as Home Guards are waiting impatiently for such an order. Though the duty allowance of a VHG was enhanced from Rs 45.00 per day to Rs 60.00 per day during the call up duty of 90 days in a year vide J&K Government order No. 123 Home 2011 dated 09-02-2011. But it is insufficient as well as against the mandates of Minimum Wages Act.
The VHGs render their duty with honesty and dedication round the clock even in hard and adverse situations like the jawans of other belt forces. To increase their knowledge, experience and skills they attend the training camps also whenever and where ever the higher authorities desire. But it is difficult for the VHGs to meet their both the ends with such a meager amount paid to them by the Government. One may fully imagine the poor condition of a volunteer in which he tries to perform his domestic duty. How he manages the domestic expenses mainly relating to the fundamentals like food, clothes, education and medical of his family members only he knows. Precisely, VHGs in J&K are passing their life in extreme miseries. They have been knocking relentlessly at the doors of concerned higher authorities at State as well as Centre level for over two decades for their most genuine demand of regularization fulfilled. They demand that they should be treated at par with other jawans of belt forces. But the fruitful results still seem far away. Except some paper work and few assurances nothing has been done by any quarter in the long pending matter. Though, they are vigorously agitating and struggling at every level. Yet, none is here to pay any attention towards their woeful screams.
Even the Minister of Home Affairs Communication and Information Technology (Govt of India) in its letter dated 24th February 2011 had requested Omar Abdullah Chief Minister J&K to look into the matter personally and consider the case sympathetically for regularization of 2nd batch of VHGs at par with Ist batch as well as at par with their counterparts of Punjab and Haryana. But the sympathetic personal consideration of the Chief Minister is still awaited.
The concerned authorities at all levels now should not hesitate to take prompt and favourable decision in the long delayed painful issue. The noble act of the higher ones would provide solace to the VHGs as well as their family members. Otherwise, great injustice is being done to them by the elite holding the responsible chairs.
