JAMMU, July 30: Muzaffar Maqbool of Srinagar and Lal Chand, Anjali Choudhary and Suchi Devi of Samba sparkled in the trials-cum-competition of elite Athletes Excellence Programme of the Sports Authority of India for J&K organized at MA Stadium, here today.
The trials were held in 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m events as part of the country wide programme to select promising middle distance runners from across the Country.
The athlete selected through such trials in all States will then be trained at the newly established National Academy for long and middle distance runners at Trivandrum, Kerela.
Kupali Patel Singh, Arjuna Awardee, National Coach in Rhythmic Gymnastics was the chief guest at the concluding function.
She gave away prizes to the winners and the participants on the valedictory function. Earlier, Deputy Director Sports Authority of India Northern Centre, Ajit Singh appreciated the efforts put in by the participating athletes and called upon them to work harder to make a mark for themselves at the international level. He also thanked the J&K State Sports Council for its support and patronage in organizing the event.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included Ranjeet Kalra, member standing committee, J&K State Sports Council, Ravinder Singh, Secretary J&K Athletics Association, Rajan Sharma, Sports Officer Jammu and officers and coaches of the SAI and J&K State Sports Council.

Jammu, July 30: Chief Of Staff (COS), White Knight Corps visited Military Hospital (MH) at Satwari, today.
He was received by the Commandant of the hospital. During the visit, COS visited the all OPDs and entire compound of the hospital to get first hand information.
He appreciated the MH for the latest concept of maternity OT along with the delivery suites as any emergency can be tackled without any delay.
General Officer also interacted with the medical and paramedical staff and encouraged them to continue hard work and motivated them to keep up the standard of health care being provided to the patients. He also stressed that the soft skills to be practiced regularly to make patients as comfortable as possible.
He appreciated the staff of the hospital for the quality and standard of comprehensive health care being provided by this prestigious hospital whose motto is “Care with Compassion”.

Skill development course concludes at Nari Niketan

JAMMU, July 30: A skill development course on “Making of Soft-Toys” conducted by SBI Rural Self Employment Training Institute (SBI-RSETI) Jammu concluded at Nari Niketan in RS Pura in a small but impressive function.
About 14 women inmates took advantage of the course, who were awarded certificates of participation by Ajeet Kumar Sahu, District Development Commissioner Jammu.
Sudhir Bali, District Social Welfare Officer, Jammu, R L Lochan, Chief Manager (LB) SBI Jammu, Mohinder Pal FLC, SDM RS Pura, CDPO RS Pura and various other dignitaries graced the occasion.
Interacting with the candidates, Sahu motivated them to take full advantage of the skill acquired by them and start earning money for themselves. He also sanctioned Rs 20000 as revolving fund to help the inmates for starting their money earning activity.
He also asked the District Social Welfare Officer to liaise with various Government Departments for helping the inmates in the sale of the products made by them.

India win one more medal after Nigerian lifter fails dope test

Glasgow, July 30: India got one more medal in women’s 53kg weightlifting after Swati Singh was handed the bronze while Matsha Santoshi was upgraded to silver after 16-year-old Nigerian gold winner Chika Amalaha tested positive for a banned substance in the Commonwealth Games here today.

Santoshi had finished third and Swati fourth in the women’s 53kg weightlifting competition held on July 25. They will now get a silver and bronze, respectively.

“We have got official intimation from the Glasgow 2014 organisers that Santoshi’s bronze will be upgraded to silver, while 4th placed Swati will get the bronze,” Indian Weightlifting Federation vice-president Sahdev Yadav told PTI here today.

“Now we will get 12 medals (three gold, four silver, five bronze) from weightlifting in the Games, two medals more than in 2010 Delhi. It is a huge achievement for us,” he added.

“This remarkable achievement surpassed the medal tally of previous two editions of Commonwealth Games (nine medals in 2006 and eight in 2010).”

Before 2006 Melbourne Games, three gold and same number of silver and bronze were awarded in each weight category (one each for snatch, clean and jerk, and total). Since 2006, only one gold, silver and bronze were awarded in each weight category in line with other sports.

Since the Indian contingent has been informed about the upgradation of the medals by the Glasgow 2014 organisers, the Nigerian lifter must have returned positive in her B sample also. (PTI)

JKNPP calls for independent probe into communal clashes

JAMMU, July 30: Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) today demanded “independent probe” into the communal disturbances in Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency.
“We demand an independent enquiry into the disturbances so that the culprits and the rumours-mongers are brought to justice without delay,” JKNPP supremo Prof Bhim Singh told reporters here.
Singh appealed to people to maintain communal harmony and social order to defeat the ugly designs of the evil forces who intend to disturb peace with ulterior motive to raise vote banks.
However, he questioned why Udhampur Parliamentary constituency has been chosen to disturb peace and harmony in the past two days.

JKATA takes up regularization issue with Director Agriculture

JAMMU, July 30: Jammu and Kashmir Agricultural Technocrats Association (JKATA) deputation led by its president Dr Surinder Radotra met Director Agriculture, Jammu.
During the meeting, the JKATA delegation held discussion regarding delay in the regularization list of ReZs in Jammu division.
While speaking, Dr Surinder Radotra apprised Director that the regularization list of Kashmir division is already published one month ago and the same has kept pending for Jammu division, which is discrimination with the ReZs of Jammu division.
He added that few people are trying to defame the Government and all ReZs as no one can deny the merit/higher qualifications according to Supreme Court judgment.
Dr Radotra further stated that the batch wise criterion for the regularization was not followed in any where for any post in any department in any State. The merit wise selections/regularizations are the mode adopted for selections/regularization of ReZs during selection process, he added.
Director listened to the issues patiently and assured to take up same with the Government for early redressal.

Nehru reviews developmental projects

JAMMU, July 30: Secretary to Government, Housing and Urban Development Department (H&UDD) Satesh Nehru today reviewed the progress of projects taken-up under various Centrally Sponsored and State Sector Schemes and issued directions to all field Executive Agencies/ Officers to complete all the ongoing Works/ Projects expeditiously.
He also took a review of the sanitation scenario prevailing in various Municipal Councils/ Committees of Jammu division.
Mr Nehru stressed the need to improve the sanitation system of various Municipal Councils/ Committees and directed the Executive Officers concerned to personally monitor the working of Safai-karamcharies and ensure cleanliness to prevent health hazards.
Director Urban Local Bodies Jammu was asked to moot a proposal regarding the regularization of those Safai Karamcharies against the available vacancies who have completed seven years of uninterrupted services. Besides, complete particulars of all the safai karamcharies engaged till date be also furnished to the H&UDD.
Secretary H&UDD directed CEOs/EOs of the Municipal Committees/Councils to launch One Week Sanitation Drive in their respective towns beginning from 4th of August 2014. He also stressed the need of putting in place effective lighting system and shift to low energy consumption pattern and promote the use of LED lights in all the towns.
While taking a stock of developmental works being executed under UIDSSMT, Secretary H&UDD expressed serious concern over the delay in completion of various components of the projects and directed the field agencies to expedite the completion of works by addressing the bottlenecks if any.
While reviewing the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) Scheme of JNNURM, Secretary H&UDD took a serious note of slow progress of works in MCs Parole, Ramnagar, Basholi, Reasi, Thannamandi, Kalakote, Billawar and Arnia and directed the Executive Officers concerned to speed up the pace of developmental works of dwelling units, lanes and drains, community toilets and community centers and ensure its timely completion.
Among others K. L. Khajuria, Director Urban local Bodies, Jammu, Dr. R.S. Sharma Additional Secretary H&UDD, Vinod Behnal Deputy Director Administration, Rajeev Bhushan Deputy Director Planning, CEOS/Eos of MCs of the DULBJ and representatives of the Executive Agencies were present in the meeting.

KISHTWAR, July 30: Minister of State for Industries and Commerce, Home, R&B, H&UDD, Tourism and Culture Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo today called for a mass awareness campaign regarding diarrhoea control among children and asked the Health Department to ensure effective implementation of all the schemes on ground in letter and spirit.
The Minister was speaking on a special workshop organised by District Rural Health Society, Kishtwar to observe intensified diarrhoea control fortnight under NRHM. The theme of the programme is ” Zero Childhood Diarrhoeal Deaths”.
Mr. Kichloo said that there is a glaring lack of medical facilities in remote areas and thus such programmes should also be organised in these far-flung areas so that the common people get benefited. He also apprised the participants that the classes of newly established AMT School will start soon and construction of an additional 100 bedded indoor block besides renovation of maternity block will also be started shortly. He announced Rs. 10 lakh from his CDF for hospital development.
Earlier, CMO Kishtwar Dr. Sham Prasad Gupta gave elaborate presentation regarding the diarrhoea control programme in the district. He informed that out of 30 thousand children below five years of age almost 11 % die every year due to this disease. He said that under this intensive diarrhoea programme, mass awareness is being created through ASHA, Anganwari workers and PRI’s. Superintendent District Hospital Kishtwar Dr. Pervez spoke about the importance of personnel hygiene, sanitation and oral rehydration for effective check of this disease. Dr. Javed Iqbal and Dr. Sanjay Parihar also talked about the causes and prevention of the diseases.

All out efforts being made to boost tourism industry in Jammu: Bhalla

JAMMU, July 30: Highlighting the various measures initiated by the Government to promote tourism industry in the City of Temples, Minister for Housing, Horticulture, Culture, Youth services and Sports Raman Bhalla today said that all efforts will be made to fully tap tourism potential in Jammu.
The Minister was interacting with the residents of Bahu Fort after launching development works in the locality, here today.
Mr. Bhalla said the Government has approved various prestigious projects under tourism sector in Jammu to boost the tourism industry and promote it as a major tourist destination.
The Minister informed that all the formalities for construction of Cable Car Project (Gandola) from Peer Kho to Mahamaya and Mahamaya to Shahabad Basti in Bahu Fort have been completed and construction of the prestigious project would start soon at a cost of Rs 47 crore, he added.
Mr. Bhalla further said that Government has released Rs. 95.70 crore for construction of flyover from Bikram Chowk to Convent School, widening from Bikram Chowk to Satwari to 8 lane. He said the projects are under progress on war-footing by Economic Reconstruction Agency and would be completed within stipulated time frame.
The Minister said Bahu Fort area which is one of the emerging pilgrim destinations in the state is being developed on the modern lines, by providing better facilities to the devotees and tourists. He said that Government has also created modern line wayside facilities like recreational garden, aquarium, Balidan Stumb, landscaping, view points, tug shop, toilet blocks, fencing, illumination, drinking water besides construction of darshani deodi near Kalika colony. He said that the place would be a big attraction for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi ji pilgrims and others.
Mr. Bhalla said that Government has sanctioned Rs. 3.5 crore for developing river Tawi embankments near Peer Khoo temple which includes construction of parks, Tourist Reception Centre, adding that Rs 90 lakh have been earmarked for construction of view points and road widening from Bahu Fort to Harki Poudi temple.
Responding to the demand of Saryara Bridari Sabha, Minister said that instructions have been issued to Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) for modernisation of Sabha so that the Biradari is able to utilise the place for arranging their social and religious functions there on nominal charges.
Mr. Bhalla said that Government is committed to provide all basic amenities to the residents of the Bahu Fort like better lanes and drains, adequate drinking water facilities, un-interrupted power supply, education, healthcare and road connectivity.

BJP, others protest against sacrilegious acts

JAMMU, July 30: To express anger and resentment against the recent acts of sacrilege in Basohli and Batote, series of protests were held across Jammu province on Wednesday, wherein BJP activists raised slogans against the NC-Congress Coalition Government and also burnt its effigies.
Led by Jammu district BJP President, Rajesh Gupta, party activists took out a protest march from Party Headquarters, which passed through main bazaars of city and culminated at Parade. They were carrying placards and party flags and raised slogans against the Omar Abdullah led State Government.
Rajesh Gupta, while condemning these acts, held the State Government totally responsible adding that not taking the past acts of sacrilege seriously and adopting soft approach towards such criminals has only encouraged such elements to repeat it, which directly hurt the sentiments of Hindu community. It is dangerous for the unity among the society and will create communal hatred if stern action under law is not taken, said Rajesh Gupta and warned the State Government of more aggressive protests if it fails to punish the culprits.
Meanwhile, a large number of BJP activists under the leadership of BJP Panchayati Raj Cell State Convenor Baldev Singh Billawaria held massive protest and burnt the effigy of State Government for its total failure in checking the acts of sacrileges.
At Janipur, BJYM activists under the leadership of Mandal President Rinku Chauhan held protest against the State Government demanding immediate arrest of the culprits.
Chander Mohan Gupta, Yudhvir Sethi, Munish Sharma, Govind Sarin, Baldev Singh, Vinay Gupta, Vikram Randhawa, Karan Singh, Jaideep Sharma, Surinder Mahajan, Sunil Dogra, Gulshan Mahajan, Tarsem Lal Choudhary, Kuldeep Kandhari, Sat Pal Choudhary, Arun Khosla, Ramesh Sharma, Daleep Gupta, Pardeep Sharma, Arun Sethi, Vikash Jain, Ludermani Sharma, Ajay Vaid, Subash Gupta, Surjeet Singh, Vidya Devi, Vivek Kumar, Satish Sharma, Rahul Sharma, Lovekesh Gondi, Kanav Parotra, Rahul Bagga, Chetan Mehra, and others were prominent among those who took part in these protests.
J& K Bar Association in its meeting held under the chairmanship of its president M K Bhardwaj has strongly condemned the acts of sacrilege in some parts of Jammu region. The Association appealed the Government to arrest the culprits immediately so that peace and harmony is maintained in the area.
J&K Gao Raksha Samiti in an emergency meeting held under the chairmanship of Dr S K Sharma its president has strongly condemned the two sacrilegious acts in Basohli and Patnitop areas of the region.
The Samiti appealed the Government to take stern action against the culprits for maintaining national unity, integrity and communal harmony.
