VHP seeks apology, expulsion of Udhayanidhi Stalin over anti-Sanatan remarks

NEW DELHI, May 12 : The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday demanded an unconditional apology from DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin over his remarks on Sanatan Dharma and urged the Tamil Nadu Assembly speaker to expel him from the House and remove his statement from its proceedings.

The VHP also attacked the INDIA bloc parties and the Tamil Nadu government for remaining silent over the DMK leader’s remarks, saying their “silence speaks volumes”.

The remarks came after Udhayanidhi Stalin on Tuesday called for the “abolition” of Sanatan Dharma, claiming that it divides people, repeating the controversial statement he made in September 2023.

VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal accused the DMK leader of repeatedly insulting Sanatan Dharma and hurting the sentiments of crores of Hindus.

“He should apologise for such objectionable remarks. The speaker should not only expunge such words from the proceedings of the House but should also expel such a legislator from the Assembly,” Bansal said.

Targeting Stalin, he said some people do not learn despite repeated poll defeats.

“Attacking Sanatan has become their destiny. They have been saying for years that they will eradicate Sanatan. But those who came to destroy Sanatan have themselves vanished over centuries. Sanatan is eternal. What is their stature that they can eliminate it?” he asked.

In a post on X, Bansal said, “Rassi jal gayi par bal nahin gaya, shayad zaleel hone ki ichchha hai (The rope has burnt but its twists remain; perhaps the desire to be disgraced still remains).”

He said some people learn from ideology and some from court reprimands, “but there are some so stubborn that they do not learn even after public rejection”.

Referring to the DMK’s recent electoral setback, he said, “It is unfortunate that even after the shameful defeat in the recent Assembly election, the DMK has learnt nothing.”

“Dear Udhayanidhi, increase your knowledge a little. Sanatan always unites people, it never divides them,” he said.

The VHP leader said the people of Tamil Nadu have already rejected such politics and warned that continued attacks on Sanatan Dharma will politically damage the DMK and its ideology further.

“The people of Tamil Nadu have already thrown such thinking out of power. If they still do not mend their ways, the coming times will be very difficult for them, their party and their ideology,” he said.

Taking a swipe at the DMK leader, Bansal said, “Though his name is Udhayanidhi, he will bring about the sunset of his own party.”

He further said “the power of Sanatan” has forced Udhayanidhi Stalin, his party and ideology “to sit in the opposition”.

“Remember, countless people who dreamt of eradicating Sanatan have themselves been erased from history many times over. Your anti-Sanatan mentality will also soon end,” he said.

The VHP leader also questioned the silence of the INDIA bloc parties over the issue.

“The parties of the INDI alliance should clarify whether they stand with those who seek to eliminate Sanatan or with those who protect it,” he said.

Bansal also sought a response from the Tamil Nadu government and former chief minister M K Stalin on the issue.

“Their silence and mute approval say a lot,” he said.

He further asserted that the followers of Sanatan Dharma are peace-loving people but know how to respond when their faith is attacked.

“The followers of Sanatan are peace-loving people spread across the world. They do not react to every provocation, but they know how to respond and will give an answer at an appropriate time,” Bansal said.

In his maiden speech as the leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin also said the opposition “will not permit” any attempt to sideline “Tamil Thai Vazhthu” — the Tamil invocation song.

“Sanatan Dharma, which divides people, must certainly be abolished,” he said. Similar remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin in 2023 had created a major row, with the DMK leader facing criticism and court cases from pro-Hindutva outfits over his remarks.

In the Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin highlighted a specific grievance regarding the recent swearing-in ceremony of the new Tamil Nadu government, saying the state anthem was pushed to the third position in the order of events.

“Such an incident, which happened during your government’s swearing-in ceremony, was a mistake and you should not permit it to happen again in this Assembly. We will not permit it,” he said.

The DMK leader added that not just in the Assembly, but at any event held in Tamil Nadu, “Tamil Thai Vazhthu” must always be given the primary position. (PTI)

Those who abused Sanatan Dharma have already been cremated: Baba Ramdev

VARANASI, May 12 : Yoga guru Baba Ramdev today said that the “funerals of some political parties who abused Sanatan Dharma have already taken place” and if anyone wants to preserve their existence and survival, they should stop abusing Sanatan Dharma.

He said this in response to a question about Udhayanidhi Stalin’s statement in Tamil Nadu that he would destroy Sanatan Dharma.

Swami Ramdev said, “Look, the funerals of some political parties who abused Sanatan Dharma have already taken place, and the Shraddha and Tarpana rituals will also take place soon”.

“So, if anyone wants to preserve their existence and survival, they should stop abusing Sanatan Dharma.”

He was speaking at the spiritual symposium organized at the Swatantrata Bhawan of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Tuesday as part of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv.

Ramdev said that Sanatan culture has been flowing continuously for ages. Sanatan Dharma has an eternal power. Today, we are witnessing this power of Sanatan Dharma politically in India, and in the times to come, the entire world will witness Sanatan Dharma’s political, economic, social, religious, spiritual, and global power.

“Today, on this Somnath Swabhiman festival, we take pride in our hearts that we are not just individuals, but ‘Shivoham Shivoham’. Every person in India lives Shivatva. When this Shivatva progresses unimpeded, then surely every child in India will emerge as an embodiment of Shiva, and India will truly play the role of world guru,” the Yoga Guru said.

Baba Ramdev said, “Yes, it is true that after independence, Uttar Pradesh has got a successful Chief Minister who lives and breathes Sanatan, and India has got a successful Prime Minister who, through his conduct, thoughts, words, behavior, temperament and culture, is working to align the governance system with the Dharma system and Sanatan system. It is a matter of pride to see that our country’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, is a living embodiment of Sanatan.”

Gold, silver jump in Delhi as rupee slides to record low

NEW DELHI, May 12 : Gold prices climbed Rs 1,500 to Rs 1.56 lakh per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday, and silver soared more than 4 per cent to Rs 2.77 lakh per kilogram, mainly due to a sharp fall in the rupee against the US dollar and firm domestic sentiment amid persistent geopolitical tensions.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, gold of 99.9 per cent purity increased by Rs 1,500, or nearly 1 per cent, to Rs 1,56,800 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) from Monday’s closing level of Rs 1,55,300 per 10 grams.

“Gold traded with gains in the domestic market, supported by a weaker Indian rupee and steady sentiment,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

The rupee depreciated 35 paise to close at an all-time low of 95.63 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, continuing to provide strong support to domestic gold prices, he added.

Silver prices also advanced by Rs 12,000, or 4.53 per cent, to Rs 2,77,000 per kg (inclusive of all taxes). The white metal had settled at Rs 2,65,000 per kg in the preceding session, as per the association.

Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, said gold and silver prices experienced an uptick on Tuesday as investors navigated the complex landscape of Washington and Tehran relations while awaiting key US inflation data.

Meanwhile, spot gold slipped USD 42.33, or 1 per cent, to USD 4,692.64 per ounce while silver fell 3.04 per cent to USD 83.49 per ounce in the overseas markets.

Brokerage firm Kotak Securities said spot gold retreated from a three-week high to trade near USD 4,700 per ounce in international markets, and spot silver slipped below USD 85, pressured by a firm dollar and rising Treasury bond yields.

Bullion market sentiment turned cautious after US President Donald Trump said the Iran ceasefire was “on life support,” following Tehran’s rejection of Washington’s latest peace proposal, keeping geopolitical tensions elevated and crude oil prices higher.

“Going forward, persistent geopolitical risks and inflation uncertainty remain supportive for bullion, while elevated bond yields, stronger dollar momentum, and hawkish Federal Reserve expectations continue to cap upside potential in the near term,” the brokerage firm said. (PTI)

J&K can ban alcohol if centre compensate losses : Farooq

Suhail Bhat
Srinagar, May 12: National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah today said the Jammu and Kashmir Government could ban alcohol “in two minutes” if the Centre compensated the Union Territory for the resulting revenue losses.
Speaking amid the ongoing controversy over liquor outlets in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah said he does not consume alcohol but those determined to drink alcohol would find ways to procure it even if sales were banned locally.
“I don’t drink alcohol. Those who drink alcohol will drink. If they do not get it here, they will get it from abroad,” Abdullah told reporters.
Referring to a past conversation involving his father, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah, and former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, Abdullah said, “I remember when my father won the election in 1977, Morarji Desai came as Prime Minister. He was against alcohol. He asked my father to stop it. My father said, ‘If you give us the revenue that we earn, then we will stop it,” he said.
”Even today, if the centre helps and compensates the revenue, the Government will stop it in two minutes,” he added. Click here to watch video
The NC Chief also hit back at critics raising objections over liquor outlets, saying the shops had not been opened by his party and questioning why objections were not raised earlier when outlets were opening “in every village.” “They are ready to criticise. They think we are afraid of them. We will give them such a defeat that they will remember,” he said.
Commenting on the broader economic situation, Abdullah warned of a looming global crisis driven by tensions in West Asia. “The oil crisis and gas crisis are coming and we are heading towards destruction. If the war between Iran and America does not end, only God knows what will happen to us,” he said.
Responding to a question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging people to return to work-from-home and adopt online classes to reduce fuel consumption amid the ongoing energy crisis, he said, ”Education is necessary. We will have to think about it and find a way because there is no online education here. Online education is not possible,” Abdullah said.

Nine killed, 30 injured in blast in Pakistan’s Lakki Marwat district

KARACHI, May 12: At least nine people were killed and more than 30 injured in a bomb blast in Pakistan’s Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said, with authorities confirming that two of the dead were Traffic police personnel.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Sajjad Khan said both deceased officers were members of the Traffic police. A statement from the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also confirmed the casualties among Traffic police officials.

Later, Deputy Commissioner Hameedullah Khan said the death toll had risen to at least nine. According to preliminary investigations, the terrorists had allegedly planted explosives inside a rickshaw before the blast.

An incident report issued by the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital confirmed the deaths and said 33 injured people were brought in for treatment. Five critically wounded victims were later shifted to hospitals in Bannu for further medical care.

The deputy commissioner visited the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Sarai Naurang following the explosion and instructed hospital authorities to provide the injured with the best possible treatment. Officials said some critically injured victims were also referred to hospitals in Peshawar.

Videos circulating on social media showed damaged shops, shattered storefronts and several destroyed three-wheelers near the blast site.

Police said a heavy contingent led by the deputy superintendent of police for the Naurang Circle reached the area soon after the explosion. Security personnel cordoned off the site and began collecting forensic evidence.

Earlier, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Shahdab Khan confirmed the explosion and said rescue teams and ambulances had been dispatched immediately. He appealed to residents to cooperate with emergency responders and avoid gathering near the blast site.

Expressing grief over the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to “eradicating the scourge of terrorism,” according to state broadcaster PTV News.

The prime minister directed authorities to investigate the attack and said all relevant institutions were working with “unwavering resolve” against terrorism, and hailed the sacrifices of law enforcement personnel and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also sought a report from the provincial police chief and promised full support for the families of those killed. He instructed officials to ensure the injured received proper medical care.

The attack comes just days after at least 15 police personnel were killed in a suicide bombing on the Fateh Khel police post in Bannu.

Earlier this week, Pakistan’s Foreign Office summoned Afghanistan’s charg  d’affaires and issued what it described as a “strong demarche” over the Bannu attack, claiming that as per investigations it had been masterminded by criminals inside Afghanistan.

DDCs give final touch to plans for approval by Finance Department

Submission likely in next few days
*Area, population, other factors taken into account

Sanjeev Pargal
JAMMU, May 12: All 20 District Development Commissioners (DDCs) in Jammu and Kashmir are giving final touch to the plans for 2026-27 to submit them to the Finance Department headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for approval.

Follow the Daily Excelsior channel on WhatsApp

Official sources told the Excelsior that the Deputy Commissioners-cum-DDCs are close to finalizing the District Capex (Capital Expenditure) budget and are expected to submit them to the Finance Department within the next few days, most likely by May 15, which is virtually the deadline for doing so.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who holds charge of the Finance and Planning Development and Monitoring Department and had presented his second successive budget on February 6 this year, will approve the plans followed by review meetings at the district levels.
There are 20 districts in the Union Territory but their area, population and various other factors taken into account for annual budget, vary drastically. While some districts have large population and areas; others including some new districts are not only small in area-wise but also have very less population, the sources pointed out.
As per the Government directive, the DCs have taken the MLAs into confidence while drafting the District Capex Budget. Besides MLAs, there are five Lok Sabha and four Rajya Sabha MPs in Jammu and Kashmir. Rest all other institutions including the District Development Councils (DDCs), Block Development Councils (BDCs), Panchayats and Municipalities have been rendered defunct.
In their five-year term, the District Capex used to be finalized by the District Development Councils (DDCs). These bodies, however, completed their five-year term on February 24 this year and now the district plans are being readied by the DCs as fresh elections were not held to the DDCs.
Prior to the DDCs, which came into effect from February 2021, there used to be District Development Boards headed by the Chief Minister and Ministers till 2018 when the last PDP-BJP Government collapsed resulting into the Central rule.
While the DDCs finalized district Capex on their own, it was only in 2025-26 that the MLAs became part of the plans after Assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in September-October, 2024.
It may be mentioned here that the Finance Department has laid significant emphasis on prioritization of ongoing works, mandating that at least 70 percent of the Capex allocation be utilized for completion of ongoing projects and 30 percent may be earmarked for new works.
As per the sources, this step was aimed at preventing spread of resource thinly over a number of years, ensure timely completion of projects and to avoid starting large number of under-funded works.
“The timeline for completion of new works has been fixed between one to two years, extendable up to three years only in exceptional cases involving mega projects,” the sources said, adding that all spillover and ongoing works expected to be completed during 2026-27 or shortly thereafter shall be treated as the first charge on the Capital Expenditure budget.
