JAMMU, July 22: Special Judge NDPS Jammu Yash Pal Sharma today awarded 15 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to Kalu Ram and 10 years RI to Tarsem Lal, who were facing trial in NDPSA case.
After hearing Special PP Bandhana Jamwal for the UT, Special Judge observed, “the affect on society of drug menace is at an alarming stage as young generation is getting addicted to the drugs rapidly and in this case, the convict Kalu was found in possession of 1.400 kg of charas. The quantity was huge and could not have been meant for self-consumption”.
“Keeping in view the quantity of the charas recovered from the possession of the convict Kalu and considering the long time consumed in trial beside other circumstances he is sentenced to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment for 15 years and to pay a fine of Rs 1,10,000. In default of payment of the fine, he shall undergo Rigorous Imprisonment for two more years for the commission of offence punishable under Section 20(b)((ii)(C) of the NDPS Act”, the court said.
“The convict Tarsem Lal has no criminal record as per charge-sheet and Special PP could not show any material indicating his previous involvement or his previous conviction in any case or NDPS case, so he appears to be first time offender and was driving the vehicle at the time of recovery”, the court said.
