Only Tibetans have authority to recognise Dalai Lama’s reincarnation: Namgyal

LEH, July 5: On the eve of the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, former BJP Member Parliament, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal strongly condemned the China’s interference in the process of recognising the next Dalai Lama.
In a statement, Namgyal emphasized that the exclusive authority to identify the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama rests solely with the Tibetan people and the Ganden Phodrang Trust, as per the spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
Namgyal categorically rejected the People’s Republic of China’s claim over the recognition process, calling it a “blatant violation of religious freedom” and an “assault on Tibetan cultural heritage.”
He said, “The continued interference by the Chinese Communist Party in this sacred process is not only unjustified but illegitimate and condemnable. The reincarnation of a spiritual leader is a religious matter—not a decision for a political regime that suppresses religious freedom in Tibet.”
He also criticised China’s 2007 State Religious Affairs Bureau Order number 5, which mandates Government approval for reincarnations of Tibetan lamas, including the Dalai Lama.
Namgyal labelled the order as “politically motivated, spiritually void, and fundamentally flawed.”
Reiterating Dalai Lama’s own stand that the Ganden Phodrang alone holds the legitimate authority in such matters, Namgyal said any “Dalai Lama” selected by China will be outrightly rejected by Tibetans and the global Buddhist community.
He called on democratic nations and spiritual leaders across the world to denounce China’s attempts at appropriating Tibetan religious institutions.
