SRINAGAR : Only one-way traffic will continue on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
There was light snowfall yesterday on both sides of Jawahar tunnel but the highway was through though traffic was disrupted for some time after a truck and a light vehicle developed some technical fault at Ramsu and Penthal.
Till further orders only one-way traffic will continue on the highway, a traffic police official said.
He said hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and empty trucks and oil tankers besides trucks loaded with fruits, left different parts of the Kashmir valley for Jammu this morning.
However, no vehicle, including belonging to the Army and other security forces, will be allowed from opposite direction, he said.
However, he said, traffic on the highway was disrupted for some time after a light vehicle developed some fault at Ramsu.
A truck also got stranded at Penthal due to some fault. Later both the vehicles were removed and traffic resumed, he said adding there was light snowfall also in Banihal, Shaitan nallah and tunnel area.
About restoring two-way traffic on the highway, he said, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway have already pressed into service to make two-way journey on the road safe.
There are some spots on the road where two vehicles cannot pass easily due to landslides, he said, adding that to avoid any accident and traffic jam, only one way traffic will continue till further orders.
Traffic on the highway was frequently affected since January 6, when there was first heavy snowfall after several months dry spell. (AGENCIES)
