One militant killed, soldier injured in Sopore encounter

BARAMULLA:  A militant was killed and a soldier injured in an encounter during a Cordon and Search Operation in Sopore in this north Kashmir district on Thursday, a senior police officer said.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, Munir Ahmad Khan said on a tip-off about a militant hideout at a hill top at Sagipora, Sopore, Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF launched a joint search operation.

All the exit points were sealed and search operation launched, they said, adding there were few firing shots when the CASO was launched in the  forest area. Two militants hiding in a hideout in the woods opened fire and tried to fled away after they saw security forces approaching them, he said adding one soldier was injured.

Since the entire area was sealed, one of the militant was killed while another managed to enter a nearby village. Mr Khan said house-to-house searches were going in the village to trace another militant.

There are about 40 houses besides other structures in the village on the foothill, he said, adding an operation was going on when the reports last came in. The identity of the militants was being ascertained, he said. (agencies)
