One-day ‘Workshop on Census Data Dissemination’ held at KU

SRINAGAR, Aug 12: With an aim to spread awareness about the application of Census Data for effective policy planning, academic pursuits, research and better governance Department of Economics, University of Kashmir in collaboration with Directorate of Census Operations, J&K, GOI organized a ‘One-Day Workshop on Census Data Dissemination’ at KU here on Tuesday.
While inaugurating the workshop, Vice Chancellor KU Prof AM Shah said that there is a need to disseminate the benefits of this exercise in the society so that all stakeholders who may include students, scholars, researchers, policy planners, economists, bureaucracy and Government, could get benefitted by utilizing the rich data provided by census in their respective fields for better results and overall growth and development.
Controller Examinations Prof AS Bhat while referring to the Census of 2011 said that while some positive trends have emerged over the years on the literacy rate and mortality rate in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the overall declining trend in sex-ratio of the State is an area of concern and now it is the job of the sociologists to find out what has gone wrong in the society.
In his presentation, Joint Director Census Operations, J&K, GOI, CS Sapru informed that India is the only country in the world which has census data available since 1872 in digitized form.
Earlier Head, Dept of Economics Prof Iffat Yasmin said that  the Department has signed an MoU with Directorate of Census Operations, J&K, GOI under which a Census Workstation has been set up which shall be inaugurated in the month of September for the overall benefit of the students, scholars and faculty members of the University.
Dean Academic Affairs KU Prof MA Wani, Registrar KU Prof ZA Reishi, Deans of various faculties, Heads of several departments, students, scholars and faculty members of Economics Department were also present on the occasion.
