The nearing completion of North India’s first and the country’s third Oceanarium at Bagh-e-Bahu in Jammu marks a visionary leap in the region’s tourism landscape. Conceptualised under Phase II of the Aquarium-cum-Awareness Centre and sanctioned by the Jammu Smart City Limited, the Rs19 croreproject is not just a showcase of marine biodiversity-it is a symbol of the city’s aspirations to redefine itself from a transit hub to a destination in its own right. For decades, Jammu has largely served as a gateway to the revered shrines of Katra and the scenic landscapes of Kashmir. However, with increasing competition among Indian states to attract domestic and international tourists, the need for innovative and immersive attractions in Jammu itself has become imperative. The Oceanarium, with its 20-metre-long glass tunnel housing over 40 species of marine life, including sharks, promises a spectacular and educational experience that will attract families, students, and curious travellers alike.
What makes this initiative even more commendable is the foresight of the Jammu Smart City project in conceptualising such a unique offering in a landlocked region. Bringing the sea to the Himalayan foothills is no small feat. The incorporation of advanced water recycling systems, careful procurement of marine species, and a tie-up with a Chennai-based company for operations reflect a level of planning and execution that sets a high benchmark for future developments. The Oceanarium should serve as a springboard for a broader vision. Jammu needs many such niche attractions-be it cultural centres, botanical gardens, adventure parks, or themed entertainment zones-that not only prolong visitor stays but also diversify the city’s tourist profile. Such diversification is crucial if Jammu is to move beyond its identity as a brief stopover. The fact that JSCL continues to explore innovative projects demonstrates a progressive approach to urban and economic transformation. Tourism is about experiences now. By developing a sea-like ecosystem, Jammu offers an imaginative, almost surreal experience to its citizens and guests. It’s time to build upon this momentum, positioning Jammu as a standalone tourism hotspot rather than just a corridor to other destinations.
