JAMMU, May 4: Expressing disappointment that Jammu and Kashmir remains the only region in the country without full constitutional OBC reservation, prominent OBC leader Lakhbir Singh Sohal has urged the Centre and UT administration to bring the Union Territory in line with national OBC reservation standards of 27%.
Sohal also recalled the Labana community’s struggle for OBC status, achieved in 2008 under the OSC category with limited 2% reservation, later upgraded to central OBC in 2016. As a result, four youth from the community qualified for IAS/IPS within eight years-an achievement Sohal termed historic for the community.
As the founder president of the All J&K Labana OBC Sabha and State working president of the All India Backward Classes Union (AIBCU), Sohal termed Centre’s recent decision to conduct caste census a crucial move for inclusive policymaking and delivering benefits to the most marginalized. He also called for a clear timeline and adequate budgetary provision for conducting the caste-based census.
