JAMMU, June 15: National Students Union of India has urged the Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar for immediate evacuation of Indian students, especially from Jammu & Kashmir, who are stranded in Iran amid Israel-Iran military conflict.
Talking to media persons, here today, NSUI State president Ajay Lakhotra informed that he has written a formal letter to Dr Jaishankar regarding the grave situation being faced by Indian students-particularly the approximately 1,500 students from J&K -currently stranded in Iran due to the escalating geopolitical conflict between Israel and Iran.
“Most of these students are pursuing MBBS and other professional courses in institutions such as Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Recent airstrikes and military activity have created widespread panic. Reports of explosions, ground tremors, and disruptions in communication have left students fearful, while the closure of Tehran’s airspace and flight suspensions have made their safe evacuation increasingly difficult,” he explained.
Lakhotra said that students like Tabiya Zahra from Kashmir and Alisha Rizvi from Uttar Pradesh have shared terrifying accounts of the crisis and their families are extremely anxious pleading for urgent repatriation measures.
“Given these circumstances, we respectfully urge you to initiate the following immediate steps: Initiate an urgent Evacuation Plan; kindly coordinate with the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the Iranian authorities to explore possibilities of evacuation via special flights or alternative secure routes; provide on-ground support via embassy: ensure the embassy is extending all necessary assistance including safe accommodation, communication access, and health/security updates to Indian students; set up a 24×7 Helpline, a dedicated channel for the families of stranded students should be established to address their concerns and keep them informed about developments; ensure Central Data Collection, an accurate count of Indian students in Iran,” reads the letter, copy of which was produced by NSUI leader during the press conference.
The NSUI leader hoped that the Ministry will act decisively and compassionately, as it has in the past during crises in Ukraine, Sudan and Afghanistan. “The parents of these young students, and indeed the nation, look up to your Ministry for swift and safe action. NSUI Jammu & Kashmir remains ready to assist in any way to facilitate this process,” said Ajay Lakhotra.
