This refers to article ‘Make qualification of NREGA Ombudsman Public’ by Raja Muzzafar Bhat (Excelsior May 1st). I hope A R Veeri newly appointed Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister is aware of this unholy practice which his predecessor had initiated ? NREGA is marred by scandals and misappropriation of public funds. It is not mere an Employment Guarantee Scheme for unemployed and jobless villagers but a Rozgar guarantee for political workers and contractors. Appointment of Ombudsman was a long pending demand and if Ombadsman whose job is to give justice to people are appointed through backdoor means, what kind of justice they will deliver? How can they listen to public grievances? We hope work experience of the appointed Ombudsman will be made public soon by Government and probe be initiated by the Minister as well in this connection
