SRINAGAR, Jan 6: Social worker Nosheen Sheikh has been awarded the achievers award for her work improving the lives of women and children in rural Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of India.
Her initiatives in women’s empowerment, livelihood generation, child development, and community welfare have earned recognition from national and international organisations, including Mobile Creches, the Indian Women Social Lobbying Group (IWLSG), and CEEOIndia.
Sheikh’s programmes focus on measurable outcomes, such as increasing women’s incomes, improving access to education, and promoting community participation. Her work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality, poverty reduction, decent work, and child welfare, and may lead to future engagement with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Sheikh has supported women artisans through skill development, handicrafts and handloom promotion, rural tourism initiatives, and campaigns for drug-free communities. A key initiative, the “Hunar” brand, connects women-led handicraft groups from Jammu and Kashmir to markets in Europe and the Middle East, boosting income and visibility.
