The information was given today by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha raised by MP Mohmad Haneefa, who had sought details regarding the reduction in seat share for Ladakhi students in NEET-PG.
In his question, the MP asked whether the Government was aware that before 2022 Ladakh had an exclusive four per cent seat share in each speciality in NEET-PG and whether inclusion of Ladakh in the common category list of J&K had reduced opportunities for Ladakhi students to secure postgraduate seats.
Replying to the query, the Minister said that NEET-PG counselling for 50 per cent All India Quota seats and 100 per cent seats of Central and Deemed Universities is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in accordance with the scheme laid down by the Supreme Court.
She stated that the reservation policy for NEET-PG counselling under the All India Quota provides 15 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes, 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribes, 27 per cent for Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer), 10 per cent for Economically Weaker Sections and 5 per cent horizontal reservation for Persons with Disabilities as per National Medical Commission norms, adding that there is no provision for any separate reservation beyond those already notified.
The Ministry further informed the House that before 2022, medical graduates from Ladakh competed for postgraduate seats in the same pool comprising J&K Scheduled Tribe medical graduates. However, from 2022 onwards, Ladakh has been given four per cent reservation in the total postgraduate seats of J&K, with two per cent each for Leh and Kargil districts.
The Government also clarified that Ladakh has not been included in the common category list of J&K.
