SRINAGAR, Sept 11: In light of significantly improved conditions on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and the prevailing security situation, authorities have decided to allow unrestricted movement for fruit-laden trucks and the general public on this vital road connecting the Valley with the rest of the country.
Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Vijar Kumar Bidhuri, shared details about this pivotal decision today, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the benefits of enhanced road conditions reach the people.
“Previously, we adhered to a strict schedule for traffic flow on the National Highway, especially during convoy movements. However, following a recent visit by the Chief Secretary, it has been decided that there will be no restrictions on National Highway traffic, including fruit-laden trucks,” Bidhuri announced, adding that people can now commute freely on a daily basis without any hindrances.
Reflecting on the background of restrictions imposed on the National Highway, Bidhuri explained that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was established by authorities following the Pulwama attack to regulate traffic during convoy movements.
“During convoy movements, traffic on the opposite side of the road was halted. This measure was taken when road construction was underway, and dividers were not yet installed,” he clarified.
Bidhuri emphasized that the administration has conducted a thorough review of the entire situation, taking into account the overall improvement in conditions. Consequently, the decision to facilitate the movement of the general public and fruit-laden trucks was made.
Meanwhile, the Kashmir fruit growers and dealers wholeheartedly welcomed this decision, fervently asserting that this year had been devoid of the perennial challenges associated with transporting fruit-laden trucks out of Kashmir.
“We extend our warm appreciation for the decision aimed at ensuring a seamless traffic flow on the National Highway, with special consideration for the fruit-laden trucks. In past years, these trucks frequently experienced protracted standstills for days on end, but this year has proven to be markedly different. We ardently hope that this positive trend will continue into the future,” said Bashir Ahmad Bashir, Chairman of the Kashmir Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, conveyed with enthusiasm to Excelsior.
Pertinent to mention here, on September 9, during a meeting with security agencies, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Vijay Kumar, announced that as an immediate measure, civilian traffic will not be halted during the movement of VVIPs or senior officers on the National Highway.
