No respite from chill, more trouble ahead in Kashmir

SRINAGAR :  There was no respite from chill as more trouble is in store for the people of Kashmir valley who are facing fog, poor visibility and icy cold winds for the past two days.
A Met department spokesperson said, “the visibility which was 100 meters during morning hours in the summer capital, Srinagar, yesterday, disrupting air, rail and road traffic, was just 45 meters today.”
He said, “the foggy conditions will continue in the morning and evening during the next 24 hours in the city though the maximum and minimum temperature would be above normal.”
He said, “there could be isolated or scattered rain during the next 72 hours in Srinagar, where people are using all gadgets besides the local kangri for heating purpose.”
However, weather will remain dry in Jammu and there is possibility of isolated rain in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours.
People woke up to yet another foggy and cold morning, disrupting normal life in Srinagar. Though the minimum temperature 0.9 degree in Srinagar remained above normal but it was slightly less than yesterday when it was 1.3 degree against the normal of zero.
Very less number of people and vehicles could be seen on the roads in the morning. However, as the day progressed situation witnessed improvement.       Spokesman said, “the sky would be again generally cloudy with fog in the morning and evening in the city during the next 24 hours and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 12 degree and two degree respectively.”       World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which was connected by helicopter service from Srinagar International Airport from November 22, remained coldest place in the valley with minimum temperature witnessed slight drop again. Against yesterdays mins 2.5 degree, it was minus 2.6 degree, a notch below normal.
However, all outgoing and incoming flights from the airport were cancelled yesterday and today no flight could take off or land due to fog and poor visibility till 1230 hrs.       There was some improvement in the famed health resort of Pahalgam where the mercury witnessed about two degree improvement, mainly due to cloudy sky. Against yesterdays minus 0.9 degree minimum temperature it was 1.1 degree, about a notch above normal.
Ladakh region witnessed major drop in the minimum temperature as compared to yesterday when there was considerable improvement. Against yesterdays minus 0.3 degree it was the mercury dropped and settled at minus 5.8 degree while at Kargil it was minus 6.4 degree minimum temperature.
Spokesman said, “there is possibility of light snow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 12 degree and one degree at Leh during the next 24 hours.”     At Jammu the sky would be partially to generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 23 degree an 12 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.  (UNI)
