No policy to provide free treatment to patients suffering from serious ailments: Govt

Srinagar, June 17: State Government today made it clear that it has not formulated any policy to provide free treatment to patients suffering from serious ailments like heart problem, cancer, kidney and liver transplant.
This information was given by Minister Incharge Health and Medical Education Department in Upper House in a written reply. The Minister said the Health Department doesn’t sanction compensation for the treatment of cancer, kidney, liver transplant etc.
He also said that no survey has been conducted by State Government to identify cancer patients. “However, the Department of Oncology is in correspondence with the National Population Based Cancer Registry Programme of India for conducting door to door survey to identify the cancer patients,” said the Minister.
He said there are two schemes in operation in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to provide financial assistance to patients suffering from serious ailments like heart problem, cancer, kidney, liver transplant etc. The Minister said that first installment of Rs. 47.25 crore has been released by Government of India (GoI) for State Cancer Institute SKIMS Srinagar whereas for Government Medical College, Jammu the matter is being followed up with Centre.
