MLA inspects flood control, irrigation projects

AKHNOOR, Mar 8: Akhnoor MLA Mohan Lal Bhagat today inspected various flood control and irrigation projects in the region to assess their quality. During his visit, he examined the ongoing modernization work on the Main New Pratap Canal between RD 4200 – 10000 meters, being carried out by the Irrigation Department at a cost of Rs 70.24 lakh.
The MLA also toured flood-affected areas along the Chenab river, including Chak Kirpalpur, Muthi, Maira, Chak Sikander, and Sittar Dyala, where rising water levels have impacted the region. He directed the Flood Control Department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) on a priority basis. He acknowledged that despite ongoing embankment and protection works, some areas were left out, leading to submerged farmland due to recent water level rise. He revealed that the department has prepared a Rs 5.04 crore DPR, which he will present to the concerned minister. Additionally, the Deputy Commissioner of Jammu has assured Rs 40 lakh under SSY for emergency relief work.
To address delays in Maira’s ongoing flood control work, Mohan Lal facilitated coordination between department officials, contractors, and local residents, ensuring the resumption of work. He urged the public to monitor construction quality and shared his personal mobile number, encouraging people to report any irregularities. He made it clear that negligence and corruption will not be tolerated, and strict action will be taken against those responsible.
The MLA assured that all flood control and irrigation-related issues in Akhnoor will be addressed on priority.
During the inspection, key officials and dignitaries present included Assistant Executive Engineer (Flood Control) Sanjeev, Assistant Executive Engineer (Irrigation) Mohit Kerni, BJP District President Kuldeep Sharma, along with Kuldeep Singh, Anil Sharma, Suman Singh, Ravinder Singh, Daler Singh, Kali Das, Pandit Sham Lal Sharma, Jograj, Chaman Verma, Suresh Kumar, and other local officials and community representatives.
