SRINAGAR, Feb 15: The Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO) today carried out a sustainability cleaning drive at Wantpora Spring under Phase 7 of its flagship initiative, Mission Ehsaas.
Located opposite the Sazgaripora side of Khushalsar, the spring was restored last year as part of the mission and later opened to the public.
Phase 4 of Mission Ehsaas at the site was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, highlighting its significance for environmental rejuvenation and community development.
The restoration work had earlier been completed in the presence of Commissioner Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department (H&UDD), Mandeep Kaur – an occasion NLCO described as a milestone in collaborative environmental action between civil society and the administration.
The drive focused on maintaining the ecological health of the revived water body and ensuring its long-term sustainability, the organisation said.
NLCO Chairman Manzoor Wangnoo while reiterating the group’s commitment to sustained conservation efforts, said: “Water is life, and every drop deserves protection.”
He said that while the restoration of Wantpora Spring last year marked its revival, today’s effort aimed at dedication to sustained care.
“Because true conservation lies not only in revival, but in consistent protection and maintenance.”
The organisation added that protecting springs is essential to safeguarding livelihoods and future generations, stressing that long-term sustainability depends on collective responsibility, regular upkeep and active community stewardship.
NLCO also acknowledged the support of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and the J&K Lakes & Waterways Development Authority in strengthening community-driven environmental initiatives.
