Srinagar, Dec 16: The post of Director at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar has remained without a regular incumbent for over a year after the last appointed Director reverted to his parent organisation due to administrative reasons, the Government has informed the Lok Sabha.
Replying to a question from Mian Altaf Ahmad, the Ministry of Education said that a regular Director was appointed at NIT Srinagar in May 2023 for a tenure of five years.
However, after serving for only eight months, the officer had to return to his parent cadre owing to administrative reasons there.
Since then, the Government said, the additional charge of the Director’s post has been assigned to the regular Director of another NIT to ensure the smooth functioning of the institute.
The Government said that steps have been initiated to appoint a regular Director.
It stated that a Search-cum-Selection Committee has been constituted in accordance with Section 17(1) of the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007, and the relevant statutes framed under the Act.
According to the Ministry, the interviews of shortlisted candidates have already been conducted, indicating that the appointment process is at an advanced stage.
However, no specific timeline was mentioned for when the regular Director is likely to assume charge at the NIT Srinagar.
