CHANDIGARH, Aug 8: Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT), Mohali, a premier Institute in the field of Fashion, Textile and Management today celebrated National Handloom Day.
The day was celebrated in collaboration with Government Museum & Art Gallery, Chandigarh, the Weaver Service Centre Panipat, KVIC, Kharar and Phulkari Emporium, Sector 17 Chandigarh at Government Museum & Art Gallery, Chandigarh.
The occasion was graced by Dr Kanu Thind, Director NIIFT, Isha Kamboj, Director Government Museum & Art Gallery, Chandigarh, Harjit Singh Sandhu, Additional Managing Director and Ramandeep Singh, Registrar NIIFT.
The event aimed to honor and promote India’s rich handloom heritage and the entire venue was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Indian heritage, featuring beautiful displays of phulkari, khadi, woven carpets, sarees, khes and live weaving demonstrations at Charkhas and weaving looms.
Dr Poonam Aggarwal Thakur, Assistant Professor through her presentation and expert talk emphasized the strong connection between designer and traditional artisans.
She highlighted the role of handloom in driving sustainable fashion, offering comfort and contributing to India’s GDP by supporting rural artisan communities.
Through presentation the message was floated to the public to buy more of handlooms which are environment friendly and help in survival of handlooms and artisans.
Dr Simrita Singh, Principal NIIFT explained that through Under Graduate and Post Graduate programmes in field of Fashion, Textile and Management, NIIFT is committed to nurturing young designers for the Textile sector, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and appreciation for traditional crafts like handloom weaving.

This celebration was also a significant part of NIIFT’s ongoing Orientation Week-2025 for Freshers (August 4-8, 2025).
During the week, new students were introduced to the esteemed faculty, staff and campus infrastructure.
A series of expert talks and workshops were conducted including “The Soul of Art: Essence of Life” by Madan Lal, renowned artist, ownership in the Fashion Profession’s by Lt. General Balbir Singh Sandhu, motivational speaker, “Importance of Digital Technology in Modern Design by Ayushi, Design expert and other sessions on stress management, Indian embroidery (Chikankari), wellness and nutrition, sampling in the knitting industry, human rights etc.

Principal NIIFT congratulated all organizers including Dr Meeta Gawri, Dr Shweta Sharma and Navdeep Kaur for successful conduct of event.
