Higher reaches receive snowfall

JAMMU, Feb 2: While the minimum temperature has experienced fall in Jammu, the night temperatures across Kashmir rose marginally, with Srinagar recording a minimum of 2.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees above the seasonal average today.

A MeT official said that minimum temperature in Srinagar city has been rising slowly but steadily since the end of ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day harshest winter period in Kashmir.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir at minus 8 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, a tourist resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius.
Among other places, Qazigund’s minimum temperature settled at 0.7 degrees, Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara’s minimum temperature settled at minus 1.3 degrees Celsius.
Winter capital Jammu today recorded a night temperature of 8.4 degree Celsius, about 2 degree Celsius less as compared to yesterday. The day temperature however remained 21.8 deg C on Monday.
Katra Mata Vaishnodevi recorded a minimum temperature of 6.9 degree C, Bhaderwah town minus 2.7 deg, Batote 0.7 deg C while Banihal registered a night temperature of minus 1.5 deg C.
Kishtwar town recorded a night temperature of 1.0 deg, Doda 2.8 deg C, Rajouri 3.6 deg, Udhampur 2,2 deg while Ramban 3.5 deg C on Monday. Some higher reaches of Doda and Kishtwar also received fresh snowfall last night.
Meanwhile, a 20-day ‘Chillai Khurd’ (small cold) began on Saturday in Kashmir , after the culmination of the 40-day harshest winter period, ‘Chillai-Kalan’. Chillai Khurd will be followed by the 10-day ‘Chillai Bachha’ (baby cold).
The Met department has forecast light rain, with snow in the higher reaches, on Monday evening and Tuesday.
