JAMMU, Sept 29: National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is going to use illegal polythene seized by the J&K State Pollution Control Board for the construction of roads on pilot basis.
The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting chaired by Suresh Chugh, Chairman J&K SPCB and attended by B M Sharma, Member Secretary; Dr Syed Nadeem Hussain, Regional Director Jammu; Ajay Kumar, Director NHAI-PIU Jammu and Purshotam Kumar, Project Director NHAI-PIU Ramban besides other senior officers of the PCB and NHAI.
To start with, approximately 5 tons of seized polythene and plastic will be used in road construction on pilot basis which when completed, will be the first of its kind in the State. The decision was taken in line with the policy of the Government to tackle the menace of single use plastic and find means of eco-friendly disposal of the same.
The Indian Road Congress in its recent guidelines has recommended the use of polythene and other single use plastic material in the construction of roads. Polythene shall constitute 10-20 percent of the raw material. The roads constructed with the use of plastic are considered to be much more durable, water resistant and have a longer life.
Chairman PCB also took stock of the compliance of the directions of the NGT by the NHAI with respect to the steps taken for control of dust pollution and scientific dumping of muck on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. NHAI authorities were directed to gear up and enhance water sprinkling mechanism to tackle the dust menace and to constitute a dedicated team of engineers to monitor and ensure the scientific dumping of muck on designated sites only.
