SRINAGAR, Dec 14: Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was re-opened for traffic after remaining closed for three days due to snowfall and rains that lashed the State this week.
A Traffic official said that the traffic was allowed to move from Jammu to Srinagar today after the weather improved and the landslides and snow was cleared from the Highway by the Border Roads Organization (BRO). However, no vehicle was allowed to ply from Srinagar to Jammu.
The highway was closed on Monday following multiple landslides in Ramban area and heavy snowfall in Banihal sector of the highway. After landslide debris and snow clearance, authorities cleared stranded vehicles on the highway.
In the meantime, a medium danger avalanche warning was issued today for some avalanche prone districts of Kashmir.
Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) issued a medium danger avalanche warning valid for the next 24 hours starting at 5 pm today. The warning exists for avalanche prone slopes in Ganderbal, Bandipora and Kargil districts. “People are advised not to venture in avalanche prone slopes/areas during the warning period,” the advisory reads.
Meanwhile, the search operation to trace out the five Army soldiers who went missing in Nowgam and Gurez sectors of North Kashmir continued for third day today. Army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) rescue teams continued search for missing soldiers in Gurez. The soldiers went missing on Tuesday after an avalanche struck Nani Post of Army’s 36RR in Baktoor area of Kanzalwan in Gurez sector.
In another incident, a landslide struck Patila Post of Army’s 20 Dogra regiment in Nowgam sector of Handwara in Kupwara district. The landslide at Nowgam sector left two soldiers missing. Sources said that there is no hope of any survival chances of these soldiers but the searches will continue.
And as the weather improved, temperatures across Kashmir dropped today. The minimum temperature in summer capital Srinagar was recorded minus 1.5 degree Celsius while day temperature settled at 5.1 degree Celsius.
Qazigund in South Kashmir recorded a low of 0 degree Celsius while maximum temperature settled at 4.1 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Pahalgam was recorded minus 6.5 degree Celsius while the day temperature settled at 0.9 degree Celsius.
Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 1.4 degree Celsius while day temperature settled at 2.2 degree Celsius.
In Kupwara, the day temperature was recorded 3.5 degree Celsius and night temperature settled at minus 1.5 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg ski destination recorded a low of minus 9.8 degree Celsius while maximum temperature settled at minus 3.3 degree Celsius.
Leh recorded minimum temperature at minus 8.6 degree Celsius while maximum temperature stood at minus 2.5 degree Celsius. Kargil recorded a maximum of 4.8 degree Celsius and minimum temperature settled at minus 8.0 degree Celsius.
