JAMMU, Dec 17: Prof Ravinder Singh, Head of the English Department, has been elected as new President of Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA), elections of which were held today.
In a straight contest, he defeated Prof Manoj Bhat of Economics Department with a margin of 24 votes. Ravinder secured 133 votes while Manoj was polled 109 votes.
Dr Hema Gandotra of Sociology Department was elected as Vice-President and Dr Tirth Ram of Mathematics Department as the Secretary while Dr Mandeep Singh of Physical Education Department was elected as the Joint Secretary.
Harish Sharma of Sanskrit Department was already declared elected unopposed as the Treasurer.
Total 242 eligible Members (Jammu University teachers) cast their vote for the JUTA elections, which were held today from 10 AM to 3 PM.
In a multi-cornered contest for the post of Vice-President, Dr Hema Gandotra defeated her nearest rival Dr Subhash Chander with a margin of 39 votes. Hema secured 11 votes while Subhash got 72 votes. Prof Ramni Gupta and Dr Vijay Kumar, other two contestants for the post, got 51 and 09 votes, respectively.
The posts of Secretary witnessed straight contest, in which Dr Tirth Ram secured 176 votes while his rival Dr Pramod Kumar Singh was polled 64 votes.
Similarly, contest for the post of Joint Secretary was also straight and Dr Mandeep Singh secured 124 votes. His rival Dr Rakesh Kumar was polled 118 votes.
Prof Vivek Kumar Gupta, who was the Election Commissioner for conducting the JUTA elections, declared the results. The new team of JUTA has been elected for tenure of two years.
