New society formed to save fish

JAMMU, Nov 26: To stop the mass killing of fish from Tawi river, illegal gravel and boulder extraction from river bed and to make people aware of the illegal fishing practices and illegal fishing gears used in their nearby water bodies a new society has come into being.
The new body of the society was declared by its chairman-cum-president Gurmeet Singh, at a press conference here today. He said Dr. Sunil Sharma will be the vice president of the Society, Dr.Ashok Sharma  as general secretary, H. Singh as treasurer,  Raman Singh as secretary,  Ricky Sharma as secretary,  Kishore Singh Rana as joint secretary,  Kuldeep Singh as organization secretary and  Dr. Anubhav Goel  as advisor of the Society.
Gurmeet Singh and general secretary Dr. Ashok Sharma later briefed about the mission and aims and objectives of the Society also.
They said mass killing of fish by outsiders has posed a serious threat to fish biodiversity in river Tawi. State fish Mahaseer has been declared endangered but its poaching and mass killing of its seed still continues, they added.
They said illegal gravel and boulder extraction from river bed has spoiled breeding and feeding grounds of the fish species. Moreover illegal fish markets are being run at railways and Trikuta Nagar area where outsiders sell their illegal catch right under the nose of the department, they added.
They said untreated industrial and sewage discharge into Blol and Tawi waters responsible for large scale killing of fish and other aquatic organisms. The bio accumulation of heavy metals and toxic chemicals renders the fish unfit for human consumption, they added.
They said society is aimed at making people aware of the illegal fishing practices and illegal fishing gears used in their nearby water bodies and apprise the department of the same and to encourage fish culture among unemployed youth and apprise them of different Centrally sponsored schemes in this regard.
