KATHMANDU, Mar 19: Nepal’s Election Commission on Thursday presented the final results of the general elections to President Ramchandra Paudel, marking the formal conclusion of the polls.
The House of Representatives (HoR) elections held on March 5, 2026, elected a 275-member Lower House known as Pratinidhi Sabha. Of the 275 members of the HoR, 165 are elected through direct voting and 110 through proportionate voting.
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari presented the results to President Paudel at a special ceremony held at the Office of the President, Shital Niwas, according to a statement issued by the EC.
President Paudel expressed satisfaction over the successful conclusion of the polls, noting that they were conducted with dedication and integrity despite “difficult and complex circumstances”.
“By conducting the House of Representatives elections on March 5 in a free, fair and fearless environment, the commission has successfully fulfilled its constitutional mandate,” he said.
“I feel this has bolstered public trust in the Election Commission and the electoral system, further strengthening our democracy,” he added.
The submission of the list of winners marks the formal conclusion of the general elections, clearing the way for the President to initiate the process of formation of the new government under Article 76 (1) of the Constitution.
Of the total number of 275 elected members of the lower house, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured 182 seats. Nepali Congress secured 38 seats, CPN-UML 25, Nepali Communist Party 17, Shram Sanskriti Party 7 and Rastriya Prajatantra Party 5 seats in the Lower House.
The RSP has secured more seats than the simple majority (138) required to form a government. The party is 2 seats short of a two-thirds majority.
As the RSP has already secured a majority, the President is likely to invite its Prime Ministerial candidate, Balendra Shah, to form the government.
The party had projected former Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, as its Prime Ministerial candidate during the election campaign. (PTI)
