Criticizing the decisions of then Government that allowed India’s water resources to flow out of the country, the Union Minister emphasized that Jhelum and Chenab belong to Jammu Kashmir, Punjab, and other areas of the country, but their water was being given to hostile Pakistan.
Shivraj Singh claimed that he had gone through the records of 1960’s Parliament debate on Indus Water Treaty, which was opposed by most of the Parliamentarians but then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said that by signing the treaty he was buying peace.
“Did we get peace? Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee rightly opposed the decision to give away our precious resources,” he said.
Commending the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi for putting the Indus Water Treaty on hold, the Union Minister said that India will now use this water for benefit of own people in the country.
Minister of State in PMO, Dr Jitendra Singh, who was accompanying Shivraj Singh Chouhan, told media persons on sidelines of a function that if Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru had not been the PM of India, the Pak occupied Jammu and Kashmir would not have come into existence.
“It was the result of Jawaharlal Nehru’s actions that first the nation was divided and then Jammu Kashmir was also divided,” he said in response to media persons’ quoting a Congress leader’s claim that PoJK would have been India’s part if Rahul Gandhi was the PM of India.
“It is hilarious if any Congress leader says that if Rahul Gandhi was the PM of India, the PoJK would have been India’s part. But the fact is that had Rahul Gandhi’s great maternal grandfather, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, not been the PM of India, the PoJK would not have been today. It is the result of his actions that first, the nation was divided, then Jammu and Kashmir was divided,” he said.
Jitendra Singh criticized Nehru’s unilateral ceasefire decision, suggesting it halted India’s progress in reclaiming PoJK during the war.
“We must not forget that when the India-Pakistan war was going on, and our forces were in a situation to win the PoJK back, it was the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru who declared a unilateral ceasefire on the Akashvani without consulting anyone,” he said.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with Dr Jitendra Singh visited R S Pura and participated in Vikasit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan event. The 15-day nationwide programme, organized by Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) is a part of the Kharif campaign and will run from May 29 to June 12, 2025
While addressing a convention of farmers during the event, Shivraj Singh said that the Government will transform the agriculture landscape of India and make farmers self-reliant.
The Union Minister paid homage to the brave soldiers stationed at the border areas and lauded the enduring resilience of farmers living under the constant shadow of cross-border threats. He emphasized the Government’s dedication to national security and agricultural prosperity.
The Minister highlighted the vital role of farmers living in border regions, describing them as the second line of defence. Terming the courage of farmers as unmatched he said that despite facing constant danger farmers continue to cultivate the land and feed the nation.
He assured the local farming community that their concerns, particularly regarding land rights, security infrastructure, and access to Government schemes, have been heard. “The demand for more bunkers in vulnerable areas will be strongly raised in New Delhi. Your safety is our priority,” he affirmed.
Underlining the Government’s vision of Viksit Bharat, he said that there can be no Viksit Bharat without Viksit Krishi. As part of an ongoing agricultural transformation, he revealed that research scientists will now visit villages, address farmer queries, and provide hands-on guidance to tackle crop diseases and boost productivity.
Terming the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan as a result-driven initiative, he expressed confidence that its benefits including higher crop yields and reduced input costs would be evident as early as the upcoming Kharif season.
Dr. Jitendra Singh, in his address, highlighted the potential of nuclear technology and biotechnology in improving crop productivity and extending shelf life of agriculture commodities. He also promoted the concept of agri-startups and urged the youth to become agripreneurs. He noted the expansion of the saffron mission from Bhaderwah to Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and advised farmers to utilize various agro-advisory mobile applications such as Meghdoot, m-Kisan, and Kisan Suvidha for better decision-making in crop production.
Jugal Kishore Sharma, Member of Parliament, Javed Ahmad Dar, Minister of Agriculture, Production, Rural Development, J&K Government, Dr Narinder Singh Raina, MLA from Jammu South, Prof B N Tripathi, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu and nodal officer of Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan for Jammu Division, also spoke on the occasion.
