SRINAGAR, Jan 18: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Srinagar Zone, today arrested a drug peddler in Anantnag district and recovered charas from his possession.
An NCB spokesperson said the arrest was made following specific intelligence inputs, during which 0.635 kilograms of contraband was recovered from him.
Bureau said that on January 17, a team intercepted an individual identified as Subzar Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohd Ramzan Bhat, a resident of Kud Angun, Marhama, Anantnag, at NH-44 near Diamond Sports Shop on the Jammu-Srinagar Road in Tehsil Bijbehara.
“Investigation has revealed that the accused is a repeat offender and has a previous criminal history under the NDPS Act,” the spokesperson said.
According to the NCB, the accused was earlier arrested in FIR No. 07/2023 registered at Police Post Sangam under Police Station Bijbehara, in which 520 grams of charas was recovered and is presently on bail in the said case.
“As per the disclosure of the accused, he was earlier lodged in jail in the year 2016 in connection with stone-pelting cases and again detained in the year 2023 under the Public Safety Act (PSA),” the NCB said, adding that he was released from custody on March 21, 2024.
The agency said further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the contraband, identify backward and forward linkages, and uncover any wider narcotics network associated with the accused.
The Bureau urged people to share information related to the sale or trafficking of narcotics by calling the toll-free number 1933, assuring that the identity of callers would be kept strictly confidential.
