SRINAGAR, Nov 26: The ruling National Conference (NC) is holding a two day working committee meeting in Srinagar to discuss the circumstances that led to the party’s defeat in Budgam bypolls held earlier this month and other issues.
A spokesman of the NC said that the president of the party, Dr Farooq Abdullah, has convened a two-day meeting of the party’s working committee here from tomorrow.
“The meeting will commence at 11 am on November 27 and continue for two days,” he said.
The meeting aims to deliberate on party affairs, public issues, and political activities while strategizing the party’s outreach and future courses of action.
“The deliberations are aimed at strengthening the party’s outreach, reviewing current developments, and charting the future course of action,” he said.
Sources said that the main focus of the meeting, to be attended by all party MLAs, will be to discuss the circumstances that led to the defeat of the NC in Budgam by-polls where the party lost the elections for the first time in the history.
NC’s Agha Syed Mehmood was defeated by PDP’s Agha Syed Muntazir by a margin of 4,478 with Mahmood securing 17,098 votes and Muntazir 21,576 votes.
Only a year ago, Muntazir lost to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by a margin of 18, 000 votes. Omar polled 36010 votes and Muntazir 17525. The PDP took the lead over the NC in all blocks except the Narbal block where it took a lead of 800 votes over the PDP.
The Budgam bypoll defeat has jolted the NC and the leadership is looking for the answers. A senior leader told Excelsior that Omar-led Government has failed to fulfil the promises made with the people of Jammu and Kashmir that was the main reason for the defeat.
He said that there was no positive change in J&K in the first one year of the Government. He further said that the MLAs also face non-cooperation from the Government officials. “How to improve governance and make officials accountable will be discussed,” he said.
Sources said that a disciplinary committee comprising senior party leaders will be formed during the meeting and it will be asked to file a report on Member Parliament Agha Ruhullah’s “anti-party” activities. The MP didn’t campaign for the party candidate in the bypolls and that was one of the main reasons for the party’s defeat.
