NC recycles autonomy at election time to make up for its failures: Mehbooba

SRINAGAR, Mar 30: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today said that by calling himself as the agenda of his party, NC patriarch, Dr Farooq Abdullah has clearly indicated that his party has fallen on bad times.
Addressing a number of wayside meetings in Pampore segment of Anantnag Parliamentary constituency, the party president, Mehbooba Mufti said NC’s attempt at recycling the autonomy resolution in absence of any performance report is a pathetic display of the fact that the ruling party has lost the capacity to lead and govern.
Appealing the people to vote for her in Anantnag Constituency and other PDP candidates in rest of the State, she said PDP has substantial achievements to its credit though it was in Government only for a brief time.
“In comparison to this, the NC has neither any thing to present to the people by way of performance over the last many decades nor does it have a roadmap for the future,” she said, adding the NC is compelled to whip the dead autonomy horse at the time of election as it has nothing else to say to the people.
Mehbooba said the admission by Dr Farooq that his party has no agenda and his person should be taken as its manifesto reflects very poorly on the State’s oldest party.
How can this party appeal the millions of young people who want to be shown the way to a bright future and a vision for creative harnessing of their talent and energies? Mehbooba asked.
Referring to Dr Farooq’s statement that the NDA Government had thrown the autonomy resolution, passed by the State Assembly, into a dustbin even without reading it, Mehbooba said the NC could not have brought a bigger dishonour to the State.
She said in spite of having been humiliated by the NDA, Dr Farooq didn’t muster the courage to part ways with that alliance even though the NC had an overwhelming majority in the State Assembly and most of the MPs from the State.
“The NC continued to stick to NDA even in the face of such insulting rebuff just to ensure that Omar Abdullah continued as a junior Minister in Vajpayee Government and didn’t claim the throne in the State as he did a short while later”, she said.
Mehbooba said it is obvious that NC is not interested in autonomy and has no agenda except enjoying the luxuries of power. That is evident from the fact that this party is a partner in the present UPA at the Centre and at the State as well, but has never raised the issue beyond occasional reference to the Saghir Committee report, she added.
