Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who holds charge of the Works Department and is also National Conference MLA from Nowshera, assured the House that no works will be taken up without consent of the MLA.
Raising supplementary to his question during Question Hour in the Legislative Assembly, Gul wanted the authorities to look into quality of macadam saying it appears that duplicate macadam is being laid.
He was referring to construction of roads in his Idgah constituency.
“I also took up the issue with officers. The macadam is laid one day and it’s quality is such that it is removed the next day. A committee should be formed to look into the issue,’’ Gul said.
Responding, the Deputy Chief Minister told the House that a direction has been issued to PWD that no work should be taken up without the concerned MLA’s consent.
“No proposal should be finalized without taking MLA into confidence and if this is done action will be taken,’’ he said.
BJP MLA from Vijaypur Chander Prakash Ganga, also a former Minister, said two works have been sanctioned in his constituency without his consent
Choudhary said that there will be no compromise on the quality of macadamization works and no payment is released to the contractors in case of use of sub-standard material.
“Strict instruction have been issued to the officers at district level for taking local legislators on board before formulation of macadamization plans or road projects,’’ he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister informed that 344.32 kilometer of road length has been macadamized/black-topped across Jammu and Kashmir during 2025-26. He added that the macadamization of roads in various constituencies during the ensuing financial year under various sectors/schemes shall be prepared once the ceiling is received from the Finance Department.
When PDP MLA Fayyaz Ahmed Mir tried to raise an issue, Surinder Choudhary blamed the PDP for loss of State and special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Fayyaz, a former Rajya Sabha member, however, reminded Choudhary that he was also part of the PDP.
“You were also in the PDP,’’ Fayyaz said pointing towards the Deputy Chief Minister.
Choudhary, however, countered Fayyaz saying he left the PDP as he knew that it was going to spoil Jammu and Kashmir.
