JAMMU, Sept 22: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday launched a sharp attack on the National Conference (NC) and its leader Omar Abdullah, accusing them of indulging in “double standards” and making statements that hurt nationalist sentiments.
Addressing a press conference, BJP spokespersons, Dr. Tahir Chowdhary, Parimoksh Seth and Zorawar Singh Jamwal alleged that the NC leadership has a long history of “anti-national activities” and playing politics at the cost of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Dr. Chowdhary said Omar Abdullah’s grandfather Sheikh Abdullah was jailed by then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru for indulging in “anti-national activities.” He also recalled how NC leader and former Speaker of J&K Assembly, Akbar Lone, raised pro-Pakistan slogans inside the Assembly. “It is shameful that NC continues to hurt the sentiments of nationalist people by resorting to divisive politics,” Chowdhary said.
Parimoksh Seth accused Omar Abdullah of trying to influence the judiciary by commenting on the case of jailed militant Yasin Malik. “This is not the first time NC has attempted to question the credibility of the judiciary – be it over Article 370, Article 35A or now Yasin Malik. The judiciary is the third pillar of democracy and works strictly as per the Constitution. NC neither respects the Constitution of India nor the judicial system,” Seth said, adding that such statements are aimed at diverting attention from the failures of the NC-led Government in the past.
Zorawar Singh Jamwal said the NC has “betrayed” the people of J&K repeatedly since 1947. He pointed out that Dr. Farooq Abdullah fled to London during the peak of militancy in 1989-90. “Omar Abdullah’s recent remarks are highly misleading and condemnable. Instead of diverting attention, NC must focus on welfare of the people and fulfil its election promises,” Jamwal said.
The BJP leaders said the NC and its allies, including Congress and PDP, have always put their families and political survival above the welfare of the common people.
“The youth of Kashmir are disillusioned because dynastic politics has blocked their future. NC must introspect instead of raising fingers at the judiciary or BJP,” the leaders added.
