SRINAGAR, June 8: Opposition National Conference MLAs today accused Government of diverting the sugar meant for public distribution in Anantnag district to the poll bound Anantnag Assembly segment where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is a candidate.
“We want to know from the Government whether it has diverted the sugar meant for distribution in other constituencies of Anantnag district to the Assembly segment where the Chief Minister is a candidate,” Abdul Majid Larmi, NC MLA from Homeshali Bugh, said during question hour in the Legislative Assembly here.
He was joined by party colleague and MLA Pahalgam Altaf Ahmad Wani who suggested that the sugar is being used as an inducement to seek votes for the ruling party candidate.
The duo supported by other NC MLAs created uproar in the Assembly. Larmi stormed into the Well of the House while Wani shouted slogans “Sugar Lo, Vote Dou”.
However, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Choudhary Zulfkar Ali denied the opposition charge saying there was no question of selective distribution of ration. “Whatever stock of food grains was available in respective districts have been distributed among the people. We have not diverted any foodgrain from one area to another,” he said.
In the meantime, Minister said that 6600 quintals of sugar is available in Kashmir valley and 5000 quintals of sugar is available in Jammu division. He said that for procurement of fresh stocks of sugar, floating of tenders and other formalities have been completed and it is expected that the sugar would be available for distribution at all sale outlets soon.
