Natrang stages play ‘The Bear’ in Sunday theatre series

JAMMU, Feb 2: Under its weekly Sunday theatre Series, Natrang staged a new play ‘The Bear’, written by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov here today.
Presented by Natraj Natya Kunj and directed by Balwinder Pal Singh, the play captivated audience with its exploration of themes like love, pride, social satire and the absurdity of human behaviour.
‘The Bear’ by Anton Chekhov explores themes of love, pride and transformation.
The story unfolds in the drawing room of Popova’s estate, where she has been mourning the death of her husband for seven months and has sworn off all social interaction.
Her solitude is disrupted when Grigory Stepanovitch Smirnov, a debt-ridden landowner arrives demanding payment for a debt her late husband owed him.
Popova refuses to pay and the two engage in a heated argument. Smirnov, determined not to leave until he is paid, insists on staying. The confrontation intensifies as they try to outmanoeuvre each other, with each displaying their stubbornness and pride.
However, despite their initial hostility, a mutual attraction begins to develop between the two.
Smirnov, who has always believed women to be foolish, is caught off guard by his growing feelings for Popova.
Likewise, she begins to see a different side to Smirnov beyond his gruff exterior.
As the tension between them escalates, it eventually turns into an unexpected declaration of love.
The play concludes with Popova and Smirnov embracing, marking the transformation of their antagonism into love.
The artists who performed in the play included Balwinder Pal Singh as Smirnov, Deepshikha Sharma as Popova and Amit Bhalla as Luka.
The lights of the play were designed & executed by Neeraj Kant whereas the music of the play was scored by Kartik Kumar.
