National highway connecting Ladakh closed, due to snowfall

SRINAGAR :  The national highway, connecting  Ladakh region with the rest of the state, was closed again due to fresh snowfall since last night.
Meanwhile, Bandipora-Gurez road, which was put through  only on  April 15 after remaining closed for winter months, was also closed again this morning.
However, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway  was through for traffic despite moderate to heavy rains.
Traffic movement on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national  highway was suspended again since this morning due to fresh snowfall at Sonmarg, Zojila pass and Drass, a traffic police official said.
A Met department spokesman said Moderate to heavy Snowfall is likely from Zojila to Drass during the next 36 hours.
Traffic police spokesman said for precautionary measure  the highway, linking the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, was closed for any traffic movement.
“We have not allowed any vehicle from Srinagar or Drass,  the coldest place in the world after Siberia,” he said adding that traffic from Leh to Drass was plying.
He said Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for  the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway again. However, he said, no vehicle will be allowed till a green signal is received from the BRO and traffic police officials deployed on the highway.
The highway was reopened only on April 6 after remaining closed since December last year due to snowfall.
About 50-km-long Bandipora-Gurez road, connecting dozens  of areas near the Line of Control (LoC) was closed again this morning, a day after it was put through after remaining closed for winter months due to snowfall.
Officials said that traffic on the road was suspended as a precautionary measure because of fresh snowfall and heavy rains.
There was possibility of avalanches, they said adding the traffic movement will be resumed when the weather improves. (AGENCIES)
