National conference on Orchids begins at SMVDU

JAMMU, Feb 13: National Conference on Orchids Science and Commerce: Integration of Medicinal Orchids, Sustainable Development and Societal benefits was inaugurated at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University.
This 3 day Conference is being organized jointly by School of Biotechnology (SBT), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and The Orchid Society of India (TOSI), Punjab University, Chandigarh. An orchid show was also organized on the sidelines of the conference.
Dr A K Bhatnagar, former Professor, University of Delhi and president, TOSI stressed the need for collaborative projects on orchids and establishment of orchid reserves. He also suggested that the participants may suggest attractive slogans on orchids for their promotion.
Dr Promila Pathak, Professor of Botany, Punjab University and Secretary of TOSI and Organizing Secretary of the conference, highlighted the activities and achievements of the society.
Prof V Verma, Director SBT, Dean, FOE, SMVDU, presented a brief of the University.  K  K Sharma, Director Floriculture, J&K, highlighted the uniqueness of J&K State in having a dedicated department of Floriculture.  He cited the case of tulip garden generating tremendous interest among the tourist while providing revenue to the state.
A  K Singh, PCCF, J&K, while delivering the inaugural address, highlighted the challenges faced in protecting and conserving the orchids in the State. He also mooted the idea of an Orchidarium for generation of awareness among the masses.
Prof Sudhir K. Jain, Vice Chancellor SMVDU, presided over the inaugural ceremony and hoped that the deliberation at the conference would evolve a roadmap for the conservation and promotion of Orchids in the country in general and State in particular.  Dr O P Sharma, APCCF, J&K delivered the keynote address in which he elaborated the a to z of orchids.
