“It was commitment by the Government to rehabilitate us but nothing has been done,” Pawan Singh, former Councillor of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) told reporters adding that the MLA Dr. Narinder Singh was also present in the meeting with the affected shopkeepers where the Divisional Commissioner Jammu had assured to rehabilitate the affected shopkeepers at Chanderbhaga.
“We had urged the authorities to halt the flyover work for two months to construct the shops at Chanderbhaga but no heed was paid,” he further said.
Singh said that they will not leave their shops till their rehabilitation is done and if any law and order situation arises then administration will be only responsible for that.
A local leader Ashwani Handa said that people at the constitutional posts should honour their commitments with the people.
“The Government should promptly respond and at least allot land to the shopkeepers so that they may construct their shops by themselves,” he maintained.
A shopkeeper Rajinder Kumar informed that he was running a shop in the area for the last over 60 years.
“We were paying GST and the monthly rents to the JMC for years,” he continued adding: “I appeal to the Lieutenant Governor of J&K, Manoj Sinha and the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take care of these poor small traders and rehabilitate them,” he said.
“Dislocating us will only increase unemployment and miseries of the affected shopkeepers,” he continued.
