Valentine’s Day-a celebration of love in its myriad forms. It’s a day when hearts speak louder, celebrating romantic love and gestures of kindness weave stories untold, marked with poetry, flowers, and tokens of affection. Beyond romance, it’s a reminder to cherish connections, share joy, and let love-pure and profound-be the universal language. It can be a beautiful occasion to express love for one’s hometown.
The City of Temples, Jammu, my city, nestled within the embrace of verdant Shivalik Hills, this charming city is cradled gently, adding a tranquil soundtrack to daily life. With the blessings of Bawe Wali Mata – Holy Kali Temple overlooking the city, the serene setting is completed by river Tawi, also known as Surya Putri, that winds its way gracefully through the heart of the city. The hills surrounding the town are a lush green in spring and summer, transforming into a brilliant mosaic of reds, oranges, and yellows in autumn. In winter, a soft blanket of snow on Holy Trikuta mountains, the sacred abode of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, adds a touch of magic to the landscape. Hiking trails snake through these hills, leading to breathtaking viewpoints where one can gaze upon the entire town and the river below. The river is not just a beautiful backdrop but a vital part of daily life where children splash and play in its shallows during the warm months, and fishermen can be seen patiently casting their lines. The banks of the Tawi river, housing University of Jammu on one side, are fast becoming popular spot for evening strolls and watching the sunset. The riverbank is dotted with cozy spots where you’ve gone for morning walks and spent quiet afternoons reading or enjoying the company of friends. Every corner of this city holds a piece of your heart, from the hilltop where you first watched the sunrise to the riverside bench where you had deep conversations with loved ones. It is a place of unparalleled beauty.
The sense of community is strong, with neighbours greeting each other warmly and looking out for one another. There are local bakeries where the smell of freshly baked bread wafts through the streets every morning. The rhythm of life is slower here, allowing people to savour the simple joys of everyday living. The people are kind and welcoming. Families have lived here for generations, and there’s a strong sense of history and tradition. Friends are more like extended family, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh. There’s a genuine warmth and openness that makes everyone feel like they belong. Certain landmarks in this town steeped in special memories and traditions evoke fond memories. The old peepal tree in the temple, where you played as a child and later shared secrets with friends. The little tea-stall on the corner, where you spent countless hours chatting and laughing. The school, where you made lifelong friends and learned important life lessons. Each place is a chapter in the story of your life, filled with moments of joy, growth, and connection. As you grow up and move away, these memories become cherished treasures, reminding you of the roots that keep you grounded and the community that shaped who you are. No matter where life takes you, your hometown remains a part of you, a place of comfort and nostalgia that you carry in your heart. As time goes by and life takes you to new places, these memories remain a source of comfort and joy, a reminder of the town that will always be home.
Known for their warmth and hospitality, many a city-folk have lived here for generations, and there’s a deep sense of pride and belonging. A small city where most of the people knew each other, where elders were respected and youngers were loved. The town squares, popularly known as City Chowk, Purani Mandi, Fattu Chowgan, Chowk Chabutra, Panjtirhi etc.in old town and New Plot, Janipur, Roop Nagar, Canal Road, Bahu Plaza, Gol Market, Gandhinagar, Apsara Road along with other markets in extended town, lined with charming shops and cafés, come alive with music and laughter during festivals as well as normal days with customers out for shopping or just window-shopping. Every season brings its own set of cherished traditions, from the spring festival that heralds new beginnings to the winter holiday market that lights up the coldest nights with warmth and cheer. The riverside park is a favourite spot for young and old alike. It’s where friendships are deepened, and countless memories are made. The ancient church with its tall steeple has witnessed countless weddings, christenings, and community gatherings. The local library, with its quaint charm, is a haven for young and old alike, a place to explore new worlds through books, where the love for knowledge and culture is nurtured.
An erstwhile favourite gathering spot in absence of many options of modern times, the Ranbir Canal with countless memories with its serene views and picnic areas was the only option for families to come together for weekends. An idyllic place where every face looks familiar and the bonds between residents are as strong as the roots of the ancient trees. People greet each other with genuine smiles and warm words as they pass by. Elders being the pillars of this community, are revered for their wisdom and life experiences. Community events often honor these venerable members, celebrating their contributions and the rich history they represent. The younger generation is the heart and soul of the town, loved and nurtured by all.
As the years go by, the landscape of the city is evolving in the name of development. Old landmarks that once defined the town are gradually being replaced by modern structures. The historic bridge has been transformed into a contemporary structure of many bridges to accommodate increased traffic. The changes, while necessary for progress, bring a pang of nostalgia. In this period of transition, the challenge lies in balancing heritage and progress. Efforts are made to preserve the essence of the town’s history while embracing modernization. Community groups work tirelessly to ensure that the stories and traditions of the past are not forgotten.
Growing up in this city, makes everyone ambassador of the colourful culture, sweet language and simple life experienced and lived here. Each one represents the city wherever one goes or with whom-so-ever one interacts. The moments, and the people who shared them, remain etched in the heart, no matter where life takes you, reminding you of the city that always remains true home. As you journey through life, the bonds of kinship and affinity and the deep sense of belonging are the values carried forward, ensuring that the spirit of this small town lives on in the heart. Venturing out into the wider world, the lessons and love from this small city go along the way.
