Multiple agencies join Daand’s interrogation

JAMMU, Sept 16: Keeping in view the important of prize catch Mehraj-ud-Din Wani alias Javed alias Daand, a number of agencies have joined his interrogation in Kishtwar district to extract maximum clues from him about his involvement in militancy as well as network of Pakistan militant outfits and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in Nepal.
Besides Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), the National Investigating Agency (NIA), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Military Intelligence (MI) and other secret agencies have joined sustained interrogation of Daand, who was captured by Kishtwar police few days back on Batote-Ramban stretch of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Official sources told the Excelsior that multiple agencies engaged in anti-militancy operations have joined interrogation of Daand following reports that Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, has become a hub of militancy and Pakistan Embassy there was directly involved in fanning terrorism in India.
Besides these agencies, a team of Delhi Police (DP) was expected to be in Kishtwar shortly to join the questioning of Daand, who was also involved in a blast at Lajpat Nagar in New Delhi in 1996. Daand was wanted in the blast by the name of Javed Guru.
Sources said almost every agency, which was instrumental in anti-militancy operations across the country, wanted to quiz Daand, who was longest surviving militant and was part of first five group of youth, who had cross over to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in 1987 for arms training from Kashmir.
The militant, who had remained affiliated to various outfits, might be having a lot of secrets about the militant groups, Pakistan Army, ISI and their network in Nepal, India and Gulf.
“It was in view of his importance that majority of agencies wanted to interrogate Daand’’, sources said, adding his questioning was expected to give significant clues about Pakistan’s involvement in fanning terrorism not only in Jammu and Kashmir but across the country.
Daand has disclosed that he along with a number of other militants from Kashmir and ISI agents had taken shelter even in the house of Visa Section Officer (VSO) in Pakistan Embassy, Arshad Ayub alias Cheema at Kathmandu.
He has reportedly said that Pakistan Embassy had become an open hub of militancy in Nepal. A number of Pakistani and Kashmiri militants have been camping in various hideouts at Kathmandu awaiting an opportunity to sneak into India, sources said, quoting from interrogation of Daand.
Sources said the investigating agencies were trying to ascertain involvement of Mehraj-ud-Din in subversive activities across India including Jammu and Kashmir.
