Srinagar, Sept 24: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today said the upcoming Assembly session must be “meaningful and result-oriented,” with focused discussions on the losses suffered by Kashmir’s horticulture and tourism sector.
Addressing reporters at the party headquarters here, Mufti said the House should deliberate on measures to compensate horticulture losses and extend support to tourism stakeholders until the sector revives.
“This session should not be like the ones we have seen before. It must be meaningful and result-oriented,” Mufti said.
“The issue of horticulture losses must be discussed. The highway remained closed for days, and the question is how these losses will be compensated. That must be debated,” she added.
On the collapse of tourism after the Pahalgam incident, Mufti said stakeholders have suffered huge setback.
She stressed that the Assembly must debate measures for revival and support to the sector until it picks up again.
Mufti also called for discussion on prisoners to ensure they are provided legal aid and shifted back to jails within J&K.
Referring to the Public Safety Act (PSA), Mufti acknowledged that the present Government cannot repeal it, but insisted its rampant use must be debated.
“The Government cannot repeal the PSA, but at least it should be debated in the Assembly. Why is it being used so indiscriminately, even against representatives? There should be a serious discussion,” she said.
The PDP chief also reiterated her demand for the regularization of daily wagers, describing it as a “burning issue” that the Assembly must take up.
“We had brought a resolution, but that was sidelined. These are burning issues that cannot be ignored,” she said.
