SRINAGAR, Apr 4: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today accused the Omar-led Government of showing “cowardice” from the outset, claiming it is even “afraid” to speak about the issues confronting the people.

Speaking to reporters here, Mehbooba said people had voted in large numbers during the Assembly elections with the hope that the elected Government would bring them relief.
“People have been facing issues for years, and they came out and voted in large numbers, hoping for relief. The ruling party now has 50 MLAs, and people believed this would finally ease the hardships they’ve endured since 2019,” she said.
The PDP president said the people had expected the Government to safeguard their rights. “But unfortunately, for the past six months, the Government hasn’t even spoken about the real issues people are grappling with.”
Instead, she said, the Government has shown “cowardice.”
“They said they wouldn’t engage in confrontation with Delhi-nobody is asking for confrontation-but they surrendered from the very beginning.”
Mehbooba alleged that the Government is even “afraid” to raise the issues that people expected to be resolved through their vote.
“Employees were fired from Omar’s departments, and he said nothing. Today, the ruling alliance came together just because a patwari was transferred. Is that really the issue? What about the major problems people are facing? Jamia remains closed-isn’t that an issue? But they don’t speak about any of that.”
The former Chief Minister alleged that the Omar-led Government is responsible for the current situation because, she said, “it surrendered before Delhi from the start.”
“The train route is being diverted to Katra-did he (Omar) even speak about that? Did he call the Railway Minister to ask about it? Forget Article 370, which they don’t even want to mention-what about the daily issues affecting people? Instead of addressing those, they get offended over transfers.”
On the Waqf Amendment Bill passed by Parliament, Mehbooba said: “This should not have happened. Bulldozing institutions belonging to Muslims is nothing short of theft.”
