JAMMU, Aug 22: Movement Kalki (Future Thinkers) today held a press conference under the leadership of Advocate Sumeshwar Kohli, Incharge Legal Cell, to protest what it termed as the “high-handedness” of the Aquaf Department in altering its construction plan near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Jammu.
The Organization alleged that the Aquaf Department is constructing a large commercial complex in the area and has changed the original plan to create shops on the road leading to the DC Office. Earlier, the building was designed with access from Circular Road, and no disruption was to be caused to existing service providers.
On both sides of this stretch, small authorized spaces had been allotted to advocates, typists, and stamp vendors who provide essential services for the functioning of key offices such as the DC, Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar, Nazool, Custodian, Director Land Records, and the Central Administrative Tribunal. Movement Kalki pointed out that these professionals not only cater to citizens visiting Government offices but also earn their livelihood from these allotted spaces.
“With the change in plan, these service providers now face displacement, which will not only snatch their livelihood but also deprive the public of vital services,” Kohli said. He further alleged that the Aquaf Department has not made any provision to rehabilitate or relocate them.
The Organization declared that it would strongly oppose the move and urged the administration to intervene. “Either the Aquaf Department should stick to its original plan or provide sufficient alternative space so that these service providers can continue their work with dignity,” the Legal Cell maintained.
The press conference was attended by the Legal Cell team and senior members of Movement Kalki.
